About This Cause
The center was established in 1968 by the Disciples of Christ, Pacific Southwest Region of the Christian Church. after a large influx of Catholic Mexican Americans in the East Los Angeles community in the 1950’s and 60’s. Originally, established as Eastmont Christian Church, the congregation decided to bequeath its property to the newly formed, Eastmont Community Center. Since its inception, the organization has predominantly served low-income, socially, and economically impoverished Latino/Hispanic families in unincorporated East Los Angeles and its surrounding cities. The organization accomplishes its mission by partnering with local private-public agencies to provide emergency relief services and access to programs and resources in social services, education, health, and wellness. Prior to the pandemic, Eastmont Community Center relied heavily on volunteers to run its programs. Since then, the organization has significantly expanded its services and staff—growing from 5 to 23 employees. Today, Eastmont operates a wide range of programs including: a summer youth and after-school program; case management for adults, older adults, and individuals with disabilities; a food pantry, kitchen, and emergency food distribution program delivering over 200,000 pounds of food annually; and a variety of educational offerings such as computer literacy, English, citizenship, and financial education classes. The organization also provides free tax preparation, financial coaching and counseling, and manages weekly farmers markets at the East Los Angeles Civic Center and California State University, Los Angeles to support small businesses and local farmers. Additionally, Eastmont subleases space to operate a state-licensed early childcare center.
