About This Cause
United Cerebral Palsy Association (UCPA) of Hawaii is a nonprofit, volunteer health organization. Its focus is to positively affect the quality of life for children (0 to 3 years old) and adults with cerebral palsy or other severe disabilities with similar service needs. Support for the families is seen as an important part of the organization's mission. Additional energies are placed on preventing cerebral palsy and minimizing its effect. UCPA's goal is to empower people with choices and to provide opportunities for independence. Services are provided through the following programs: Child Development Center: provides early intervention services for children between the ages of birth to three years, who have cerebral palsy or other conditions with similar therapy needs. Community-based services are provided. A trans-disciplinary team (i.e. occupation therapist, physical therapist, teacher, speech pathologist and social worker/care coordinator) provide therapy services and work closely with families to support the children's development. Social Services: provides care coordination, information and referral, crisis intervention, counseling, advocacy, and networking with others in the community who have the resources and knowledge to assist in meeting the needs of the association's consumers and their families. Additionally, the Social Services Dept. run a free equipment loan and recreation program. Public Health Awareness: educates the public regarding UCP's programs, as well as the causes and effects of cerebral palsy. A special Disability Awareness Program is available to groups and worksites. MACPlus Recreation: a year-round recreation program broken up into three terms. Participants can choose from such leisure activities as Friday Night Grinds, Sports/XVentures and Community Events. A small registration fee is charged, with the balance of the program funded by a grant from The Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, Inc. Kuwili Martial Arts Center: specializes in adaptive martial arts since 1999. This unique and innovative program offers martial arts training for individuals with disabilities. Person-centered and fully inclusive, all students participate in training activities, regardless of ability. Rank promotions are earned based on effort, attitude and class attendance, with training centered on the schools five (5) core tenets of Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control and Indomitable Spirit. Through consistent, disciplined practice, students gain a sense of empowerment, confidence and self-esteem, as well as improving their physical health. UCP Foundation Office: Solely support UCPA of Hawaii and its programs. The Foundation runs a solicitation office that phone households and arranges to pick up reusable clothes and small recyclable household items. The donations are then sold to Savers Stores.
