Mission Statement
Hospice of Hilo has partnered with the East Hawai‘i Community for the past 30 years, providing compassionate, quality care to seriously and terminally-ill patients through support, counseling and education.
About This Cause
It is the mission of Hospice of Hilo to improve the lives of those we touch by offering support, guidance and compassionate care of body, mind and spirit. Hospice of Hilo began as a volunteer-based hospice program in 1983 and has grown tremendously in the past 33 years, serving patients, their families and the community at large from Laupāhoehoe to South Point Road, Ka‘ū. HOH provides end-of-life and palliative care to patients and their families, in addition, grief and bereavement support to adults, teens, and children who experienced the loss of a love one. Primary Services: End-of-Life Care: HOH serves any patient who has a life-limiting illness or injury with a prognosis of six months or less to live. Hospice addresses the patients’ physical, psychosocial, emotional and spiritual needs in both its home care program and the new inpatient facility, the Pōhai Mālama a Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Care Center. Hospice of Hilo also empowers family members of patients, by helping them understand their loved ones’ disease process, what to expect and how to best care for patients’ needs. Palliative Care: HOH provides palliative services from its newly opened Hawai‘i Palliative Care Center to chronically ill patients who may be still seeking curative care. Palliative care provides patients with relief from the symptoms, pain and stress of a chronic illness and is appropriate at any age and at any stage of an illness. Bereavement Counseling and Education: Hospice of Hilo provides free grief counseling and support services to any adult, teenager or child from the community who requests help in dealing with loss. These services are available to both families of hospice patients and the community at large. PROFILE OF POTENTIAL END USERS AND THOSE WHO SERVICE THEM Hospice of Hilo (HOH) focuses on managing the physical, emotional and psychological pain experienced so that patients and their families can live each day as fully as possible. By providing a team of physicians, nurses, social workers, spiritual counselors and volunteers, each and every patient and their family truly receive a comprehensive level of care for their medical, emotional and spiritual needs. This model of care has been shown in studies to result in patients living longer on average than those with the same prognosis who did not receive such services. This model of care can be provided to patients in their homes, a private care home or in Hospice of Hilo’s newly constructed inpatient care center, ensuring every individual is able to die in a dignified way, surrounded by their loved ones. In addition, hospice care is also beneficial to our community’s healthcare economy. Duke University researchers report hospice use cuts Medicare spending in the last year of life by an average $2,300/beneficiary and up to $7,000 for cancer patients. HOH also has three certified counselors who provide free grief support services to both hospice families and the community at large. Studies have shown the stress of grief can be detrimental to children and adults, resulting in at-risk behaviors, depression and withdrawal. Of the 582 individuals served in 2012, 56 were children who received a total of 363.5 free counseling hours-84% from low-income families. The Hawai‘i Palliative Care Center, made up of a physician, an APRN and a Care Coordinator, help seriously-ill patients navigate the often times confusing healthcare system, thus preventing patients from “falling through the cracks” in the current array of services. This clinic enables patient and their family to establish a plan of care which matches the patient’s needs and wishes. A great deal of effort goes into helping patients establish an Advanced Health Care Directive and to articulate their wishes to loved ones. If not for Hospice of Hilo, the entire east Hawai‘i Island region would not have access to the valuable services offered by the organization. HOH helps patients live their remaining life to the fullest, helping them live better knowing they do not have to face the journey alone.
