Mission Statement

The mission of Make-a-Wish Hawaii is that, together, we grant life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. Our vision is to grant the one true wish of every eligible child.

About This Cause

In 1982, local executive, Jack Stanford, founded Make-A-Wish Hawaii initially to host wish children whose one true wish was to visit the islands. In 1984, we granted the first local wish for a Hilo boy who wished to go to Disneyland. Fast forward to 35 years later, and we are granting over 90 wishes per year for local keiki and more than 1,000 wishes annually for children who wish to visit our beautiful state. Being diagnosed with a critical illness is devastating, especially for a young child. Through experiencing the healing Power of a Wish, keiki are given the opportunity to forget about their condition and find strength in seeing life beyond illness. The entire journey of a wish brings a family and community closer together to change a child’s outlook and spark hope for brighter days ahead. When a child feels better, often they get better, and imagination made real through a wish come true can be the gift of a lifetime! A recent wish impact study found that: • 95% of parents said that the wish experience allowed their child to view life beyond illness • 89% of medical professionals believe a wish experience can positively influence a child's health • 82% of wish keiki strongly agreed that they experienced improved mental and emotional health due to the wish experience On average, it takes 200 community members to bring a wish to life. A child with a critical illness who has reached the age of 2½ and is younger than 18 at the time of referral is generally eligible for a wish. Potential wish kids, medical professionals, parents, legal guardians and family members with detailed knowledge of the child’s current medical condition can initiate the referral process. Deliver hope and strength to local wish keiki by: • Making a referral • Volunteering with us • Sponsoring or hosting a fundraising event benefitting Make-A-Wish • Sharing your wish experience • Donating monetary gifts, goods and services, stock or property, and airline miles We receive no federal or state support. All funds raised in Hawaii, stay in Hawaii to grant wishes for keiki throughout our state.
