Mission Statement
Laws that undermine reproductive health, rights and justice deprive people of moral agency, rob us of control over our bodies, and compound other forms of oppression including racism, sexism, and poverty. Our mission is to eliminate these laws and the harmful impacts they have on people’s lives. We are especially focused on laws that limit the availability or affordability of abortion care; contribute to disparities in reproductive health outcomes; embody gender-based stereotypes; or discriminate against people based on their reproductive decisions. Our goal is a legal system that enables each of us to make decisions about intensely personal matters like sex, pregnancy, family, and health care based on our own beliefs and values—and ensures that we all have the resources we need to carry those decisions out.
About This Cause
Founded in 2017, the Lawyering Project is a national legal advocacy organization that blends traditional impact litigation with movement lawyering to promote reproductive health, rights, and justice throughout the United States. We seek to ensure that the voices of those most impacted by abortion restrictions are heard in courtrooms across the country and to provide vital legal services to those on the frontlines of abortion access. Our Litigation Program leverages the courts to eliminate barriers to reproductive health services and promote equity in access to care. We seek to demonstrate that, while abortion restrictions harm everyone, they impose disproportionate burdens on marginalized communities, including poor people, people of color, immigrants, and adolescents. Even when we’re unsuccessful in court, our litigation serves to document injustice; educate the public; mobilize supporters; and consume our opponents’ resources. Our Access & Innovation (A&I) Program provides pro bono legal services to healthcare providers, researchers, and organizations, helping them make informed decisions and manage risk in a dynamic legal environment. In April 2023, we launched the General Counsel Program, which is housed in A&I and offers abortion funds and practical support organizations the kind of everyday legal support that an in-house counsel would typically provide. The Lawyering Project has also taken on a leading role in operating the Abortion Defense Network (ADN, https://abortiondefensenetwork.org/), a collaborative effort by nonprofit organizations, private law firms, and government officials that matches anyone threatened with liability for providing or supporting abortion care with values-aligned lawyers.
