Mission Statement
At St. James Child Development Center, we strive to provide a safe, nurturing and stimulating environment that allows children to explore their intellectual, emotional, physical, creative and spiritual selves.
About This Cause
St. James Child Development Center admits students of any race or national or ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. St. James does not discriminate on the basis of race, national, or ethnic origin, or any other criteria in administration of its educational policies, admission policies, and other programs administered through the school. In 1981, St. James Lutheran Church opened the Child Development Center. The church investigated many social service possibilities before deciding that providing high quality child care in a downtown location would best reflect the congregation’s goal of involvement in the surrounding community. The program was intentionally designed to not include any religious education, allowing for maximum diversity of the children and families enrolled. The center has created a program that is developmentally appropriate for each age of child served. Children are encouraged to be involved with the environment and learn from it. Children spend their day choosing from a variety of activities that include music, science, language, literature, large and fine motor activities, and art. The child as a whole is addressed by providing age-appropriate activities in cohort. In all areas, the concept of the open classroom is used to encourage decision making by each child. Teachers strive to provide an ever-changing and wide variety of activities within this setting. St. James has an open door policy and encourages visits from parents whenever possible. We support all of our nursing parents, by offering several semiprivate spaces for lactation. Perhaps you have the flexibility to visit at lunch time or another break in the day. We not only welcome those visits, but encourage them. Additionally, there are special invitations to visit throughout the year, however children always delight in the unexpected visit from parent or family member.
