About This Cause

St. Gabriel Episcopal School (SGES) is a Preschool and Pre-Kindergarten program established in 2014 in the Bethany area of Portland. SGES provides a welcoming and developmental environment where children feel secure to take academic risks allowing for self-discovery and learning. Our curriculum is based on core principles of respect, responsibility, and community through exploration with constant support and enrichment. Our child-centered classrooms are based on the early childhood philosophy developed in Reggio Emilia, Italy. The curriculum is driven by the ideas and interests of the children. Teachers observe children engaging in their environment and forming relationships, document children’s verbal and written comments, and delve into children’s artwork, expressed interests, and actions to help determine each child’s learning direction and goals. SGES focuses on the natural learning strategies and unique strengths of each individual, while also providing many opportunities for collaborative and long-term projects. Our college-educated faculty consists of teachers who recognize developmental norms and value individual differences. Our teachers find joy through inspiring in children a desire to learn by modeling with the students our core values of respect and patience. We also recognize that parents’ participation in their children’s education positively affects academic, social, and emotional development. At SGES, we welcome and encourage family involvement in the classroom, in chapel, on field trips, and with volunteer projects. Together, teachers, families, and students create an inclusive and instructionally powerful learning environment that allows children to question, wonder, and discover. SGES practices the Episcopal educational tradition of tending to our student’s spiritual development along with their intellectual, artistic, social, emotional, and physical growth. While we follow the Episcopal Liturgical Calendar Year and have chapel once a week, we also value teaching respect for other religions, and learning about faith traditions is an important part of our curriculum. SGES was established due to the dream of our vicar and her work for many years at Oregon Episcopal school. Through hard work of our many volunteers, we transformed our classrooms and rebuilt our playground to bring the Reggio Emilia influenced learning to life at the school. We continue to grow our program and look forward to having more families join our growing community at SGES. Admission to St. Gabriel Episcopal School is open to children regardless of race, creed, color, or national origin.
