About This Cause

The School Sisters of St. Francis is a religious institution of women belonging to the Roman Catholic Church. They receive their religious formation and education and are missioned to serve in their ministries of education, pastoral care, social service, administration and healthcare throughout, not just Pennsylvania, but also New Jersey, Texas, the Slovak Republic and South Africa. The Sisters have since 1913 served the needs of generations of families, particularly through their work as teachers and nurses. The sisters donate substantial hours of time per year to numerous charitable and religious programs throughout the community. These programs aid, among others, children, the elderly and the poor. The sisters have taken a vow of poverty, to live in group settings as a community and they pledge to keep a simple lifestyle. As such, they have little to no income to support themselves. However, they support one another in ministering to the people of God, relieving poverty, and advancing health, wellness education and religion. In the past the sisters founded and operated three High Schools, in Pittsburgh, PA, Bethlehem, PA and San Antonio Texas, a Preschool and a Personal Care Home. Due to the advanced age and decreasing number of sisters these ministries have been discontinued. However the Sisters continue to manage and support the following ministries: St. Francis Center for Renewal - Founded and staffed by the Sisters the Center is built on tradition of ongoing conversion of heart through prayer, reflection, liturgical celebration and contemplation. The Center's mission is to glorify God and witness to the Gospel by providing an environment of hospitality, caring and love for all God's people. The Center is open to all faiths that seek the quiet atmosphere of the Center. The Monocacy Farm Project - Founded and managed by the Sisters. TheProject is an organic and natural agriculture demonstration and production Farm. The Project includes a CSA Farm - Share Program, Community Gardens, Education Programs for Children and Adults, and a community service production farm dedicated to the support of low-income families, soup kitchens and homeless shelters. Franciscan Resource Center - Founded by our Sisters in San Angelo, Texas, the Center offers a place to learn, experience and live in the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi. People come to grow in their faith life through study, spiritual direction, reflection days and Franciscan celebrations. The programs are provided in English and increasingly in Spanish to make spirituality and services more accessible to a diverse community. The Sisters also donate a substantial amount of their limited funds to support other religious and non-profit charitable institutions.
