About This Cause
As a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Central Lutheran strives to live with integrity and service within our community. Our congregation was founded in 1924 and has a rich history of worship and education. In 1950 the facility was built where we currently gather at 1820 NE 21st Ave in Portland, Oregon. A registered historical building, this architectural icon resides in the Irvington District of Northeast Portland. In these years Central has become a place for social justice advocacy, progressive values, as well as sacred and secular gathering. Our facility has become a place of safety, collaboration, and gathering for as many as 45 different community organizations over the last decade. These partners range in purpose from teaching music to children to recovery groups to Meals on Wheels to many community concerts. Our 3000 square foot basement hosts the Northeast Indoor Playground, an indoor park that has been serving the local community as a safe and healthy space to play out of the rain since the 1970's. Children from 0 to 6 fill the park in our newly upgraded and renovated space. With plenty of space for running and jumping, the park is a wonderful place to advance both gross motor skills as well as fine motor skills at the play kitchen or woodworking bench. As the owners of the facility, Central Lutheran oversees the enormous task of maintaining this historic building. In recent years we have repaired and repainted siding. We have replaced the oil burner on our boiler with a natural gas burner. We have changed the majority of lighting fixtures to LED to conserve important natural resources. Flooring replacements, new signage, paint, and so much more help us to create a safe and welcoming space for our broader secular community. We continue to work to upgrade our current facility for the use of all. Upcoming projects include improvements to our sound system, additional dry rot repairs, and a new boiler to replace our failing 70 year old heating unit. As we continue to build community around us, our justice work thrives. Members, neighbors, and visitors join together for advocacy work on behalf of the environment, LGBTQIA+ rights, anti-racism training, immigration reform, houselessness, and many other intersectional advocacy areas. This rich work is informed for our members by our understanding of the gospel but is done in tandem with many partners of different or no prescribed faith background. Central is committed to serving our wider community and assuring a safe, welcoming, and vibrant space in the heart of NE Portland for years to come.
