About This Cause
West Houston Assistance Ministries (WHAM) is a nonprofit established in 1982, whose mission is to empower and transform neighbors' lives from crisis to self-sufficiency by providing healthy food, financial support, housing, medical resources, education, and job readiness. With your gifts, we're able to assist with short-term crises like hunger or eviction, as well as provide neighbors with the case management and tools to help them get back on their feet, and regain financial stability. Our short-term goal is to raise $3M this year to fund the costs of operating our programs and helping the thousands of struggling families who come to us in desperate need. Our underlying goals are to alleviate poverty, build a thriving and healthy community, and give hope to the hopeless. In the 2024 fiscal year, WHAM served over 115,000 individuals. Through our Platinum-ranked food pantry, the largest in West Houston, we provide school-aged children with lunch during the summer, as well as food and personal care items for thousands of struggling families and homeless individuals in a supermarket-like ‘shopping’ environment that allows them to personally select their food items, which promotes dignity and self-respect. We are also providing food and supplies in a drive-thru setting to ensure a contactless, safe, and more efficient service to our clients. Our WHAM Resale Store is open to the public and functions through the generosity of our community’s donations. Every purchase funds programs that benefit the families we serve and a portion of our operating costs. The store offers treasures and reasonably priced quality goods including clothing, furniture, housewares, collectibles, books, and artwork. WHAM has developed a reputation as a caring and empowering charity helping those in crisis at the same time that we carry out Christ’s command to love and provide for those in need. Generous support from community partners, corporations and individuals through monetary donations, volunteering, food, school supply, toys, and clothing drives, etc. allow WHAM to operate the many wraparound programs that benefit our clients in crisis.
