Mission Statement

Our mission is “Giving Children a Home.” Our highest priority has always been to meet the urgent needs of the children. When our agency was established in 1849, the urgent need was to provide a home for orphaned children. Since then, we have served over 70,000 children. St. Joseph’s is still a home for children, but it is for a very different type of child. Our residential and foster care children come from abandoned, abusive, neglectful, violent and broken homes. The State of Kentucky Children’s Review Program has classified our children as those who are experiencing the most acute forms of emotional trauma and behavioral distress.

About This Cause

We provide a home to 48 of Kentucky’s most abused children ages 5-15 in our Residential Treatment program. All have been physically abused in the worst possible ways, 85% have also been sexually abused, and many have seen domestic violence and substance abuse. On average, they have been in twelve foster homes or psychiatric placements before they reach us. They are referred to us because their own behavior – due to trauma – has made it unsafe for foster placement. Once they walk through our doors, they immediately receive clothing, bedding, toiletries, and toys – for some these are the first new belongings they have ever received. They will also receive individual therapy, group therapy, and other supportive services that will allow them to be successful in a permanent home environment, most likely an adoptive home. On average they live at St Joes a year and half and then transition to Foster Care or adoption. Our goal is for the next home in our kids lives to be the final home, and our success rate is 94% - the state average is only 60%. We also give children a home by providing a continuum of care through our Foster Care and Adoption Program which serves children from our Residential Program as well as children of all ages, birth to teen, who have been removed from their natural homes due to abuse or neglect who do not require Residential care. We currently have 50 certified families, and serve 42 children. We have celebrated more than 100 total adoptions since the creation of the program. St. Joe’s also boasts one of the best Child Development Center preschool programs in the city, which is offered to children in the general public and is a valued staple of the Crescent Hill community. Creative Curriculum, KidFit, Spanish, Music, and an excellent teacher to student ratio are all benefits of this fabulous program.
