About This Cause
The HTSD is the largest school district in Mercer County, NJ. We have seventeen elementary schools, three middle schools, three high schools, and one alternative program for middle and high school students. Our student population is diverse with approximately 45% of our students qualifying for free and reduced lunch. Sadly, there are some students who only eat meals that are provided by our school district. We work with several nonprofit organizations to provide food distribution throughout the school year and during the summer. While our district is rich in pride and school spirit, many of our buildings are close to 100 years old. There are annual referendum projects to update our doors, windows, floors, etc. however the budget cannot meet all the needs of our students. Due to COVID-19, HTSD recently became a 1:1 district, meaning we now have devices for each of our students as virtual learning left many of our students without access to technology or wifi. Technology is only part of the hurdle when addressing student learning loss and needs. Many of our student population have suffered trauma due to the pandemic, losing family members and parents out of work. HTSD is in need of student support programs such as mentorship, tutoring, social and emotional counseling, and basic needs. Each month, our teachers submit grant requests for new classroom furniture, reading supplies, maker space furniture for shared spaces such as libraries and media centers. Many of our students do not have access to green space at home; therefore, our teachers are requesting assistance to provide gardens for their students to cultivate on school grounds. The fruits and vegetables grown are distributed throughout the school to students and families in need. With basic life needs such as food, personal hygiene, and emotional support, our students are further challenged when asked to pay for school trips, school supplies, and cold weather gear. Throughout the year, we continuously work with our local community supporters to provide basic hygiene and health kits for our students. We work with local organizations who offer programs free of charge to allow all students to attend. We also collaborate with nonprofit organizations to provide back packs, lunch boxes, books, snacks, etc. Many of our middle and high school students are forced into "adulting" at a young age. Their parents work and they have younger siblings who need to be walked to school, need help with their homework, and need lunch and dinner provided for them. Our students have taken on additional roles in order to keep their families intact and meet the daily needs of their entire families. The need is great and continuously grows. Support is needed to assist our students with their basic needs as well as their mental and emotional health. They cannot learn if they are hungry and they cannot thrive if they are experiencing trauma.
