Mission Statement
Holbrook Indian School, located in Holbrook, Arizona near the Navajo (Diné) reservation, is a 1st- through 12th-grade boarding school serving Native American youth. Holbrook also operates a 1st- through 8th-grade day school in Chinle, Ariz., Navajo Nation. For more than 70 years, Holbrook has inspired young people to reach their full potential by providing a safe place to learn, live, and grow by giving them an opportunity to develop their God-given intellect and creativity.
About This Cause
Holbrook Indian School is operated by the Pacific Union Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist church. When boarding schools first came to America, the motto and the driving force behind them was to "Kill the Indian and Save the man." Holbrook is not about killing what is Native in it's students. It is about helping them reclaim their identity. It is about restoring hope to Indigenous youth through a values-based curriculum that includes an emphasis on Navajo (Diné) arts, history, language and culture. Teachers strive to help students understand the value of academic discipline, the importance of stewarding their heritage, and the necessity of becoming leaders in their communities. Generous individuals who want to help restore the full potential of hurting children provide more than 80 percent of our budget. We invite you to join us in this important work. A Better Way The NEW (Nutrition, Exercise, and Wellness) You Health Initiative seeks to improve every dimension in the lives of our students to help make their futures brighter. The program has four pillars. Each one provides a fundamental component of the students’ environment and education with specific, practical applications. Physical Health Garden-to-Plate: This agricultural learning and development program allows students to learn how to grow, harvest, and prepare produce that is then served to them in the cafeteria. Mental Health Individualized Christian Counseling Services: Christ-centered counselors assist students with post-traumatic stress and behavioral issues that inhibit their education. Spiritual Health Chaplaincy program: HIS provides a variety of opportunities for students to hear, experience, and share the love of God.. Academic Achievement College Prep and Technical classes: Students can achieve academic excellence more easily when they learn how to balance their physical, mental and spiritual health. Jovannah’s Story https://vimeo.com/134681251 I was sixteen when I met my father for the first time in a high-security prison. Before that I had been molested by my step-dad, raped by my cousin, and abandoned by my mother. Holbrook Indian School was my sanctuary. I experienced peace because I wasn’t afraid to go to sleep at night or worried about where my next meal was going to come from. I discovered that I had a voice and could be successful in my classes. At first I resisted Christianity because of what I believed it stood for and then immersed myself in it because of what I learned it stood for. I went to Union College in Nebraska, completed my education, and returned to Holbrook to help others like me. Some people look at our school and wonder why we keep trying. They wonder why we sacrifice so much of ourselves and our families when many of our students walk off our campus and right back into the life we try to keep them from — a life where abuse and neglect breaks a person’s spirit. But I look at our kids and I see hope. I know from experience that it is possible to break the cycle. I don’t always know exactly what to say or do for our students that will make a difference in their lives. I do know God looks at each one of them in desperation, waiting for someone to accept, love, and teach them in His name. And I know that He wants all of them to have a chance at something more. Please join us in our mission to bring restoration and healing to our students. Jovannah Poor Bear-Adams, HIS Alumna and Vice Principal
