Mission Statement
New Day School is a project inspired by the Neo-Humanistic vision of Prabhat Ranjan Sarkar, also known as Shrii Shrii Anandamurti, the founder of Ananda Marga. Our vision is a place where an imaginative and dynamic environment brings to life the principles of Neo-Humanistic Education. Our mission is to create a learning environment and curriculum which provides for the education of body, mind, and spirit. Neo-Humanistic Education unveils the innate greatness within each individual, strengthens the foundation of ethics, and inspires benevolent action in the world.
About This Cause
New Day Ananda Marga School of Portland, is registered in the state of Oregon as a religious, non-profit corporation. It runs a state certified preschool that has been serving Portland's families since 1979. Our mission is to create a learning environment and curriculum which provides for the education of body, mind, and spirit. This Neo-Humanistic education unveils the innate greatness within each individual, strengthens the foundation of ethics, and inspires benevolent action in the world. The philosophy of “Neo-Humanism”, propounded by Mr. P.R. Sarkar , a philosopher and a visionary, is to expand the spirit of humanism (love for all human beings) to encompass a love and compassion for the whole creation (all beings in this universe). This philosophy includes the recognition that all beings are deeply interconnected and are each a unique expression of infinite consciousness. At New Day School, we describe the development of the being in terms of Movement — Awareness — Awakening. The NHE philosophy and curriculum helps one develop the ongoing practice of directing one’s thoughts and actions (Movement) toward a magnanimous and benevolent understanding and interaction with the world (Awareness). The practice of this philosophy culminates in the deeper realization of one’s inner truth and altruistic love for creation (Awakening). On the basis of this philosophy, Neo-Humanistic Education emphasizes the importance of developing the whole child in order that he/she may realize his/her highest potential. Lessons bring to children, parents and teachers practical knowledge and expansive ideas to ponder. Through the blending of yoga and meditation practice, artistic expression, sustainable practices, intellectual exploration, ethical values and service, the Neo-Humanistic curriculum helps children see interconnections and develop deep love and respect for all. New Day School offers an introduction to yoga and meditation, focused garden classes, as well as arts & crafts and lots of P L A Y! Our days are full of routine, whimsy, wonder and community. We are blessed with a remarkable outdoor space in the heart of the city with a huge kitchen garden, which furnishes our garden to table program. We provide healthy vegan meals and snacks. Our children are outdoors for at least 2 to 3 hours per day-rain or shine- all year round, enjoying focused and free play nature study. New Day School offers a full day program with part week options for the potty- trained children aged 2.5-5 years old. Our hours of operation are 8-4:30 p.m. with aftercare options until 5:30 p.m. We accept families on DHS assistance and offer scholarships to the eligible families.
