Mission Statement

Our mission is to be a healing presence in a world where Churches are dwindling and places for worship are becoming harder to come by. Our church aims to do our part to spread the word of God in these trying times. We are a small knit Church family and strive to do things the right way with a permanent place of worship to call our home. We aim to be good stewards of the blessing and faith that has bestowed upon us through the Holy Spirit, as faithful servants of our Lord. Your donation will help us to achieve our mission.

About This Cause

Our parish, St. Barnabas Orthodox Church, was founded in 2015 as a fully English worshiping community with the mission of living a truly incarnational faith in the DC/Virginia/Baltimore areas. We are led by Father Anoop Thomas, and through his leadership, and spiritual guidance, we continue to grow with dedicated and many new families and individuals joining us for worship every Sunday. We seek to share and live our faith so that all in the DMV may know the fullness of life in Christ and His Church. Our focus as a parish is built on the Holy Altar and sacramental worship. Through the liturgical life, we seek to bear full witness to the transformational power of God’s word. We warmly welcome seekers of every race, color, and ethnicity. Our patron, Saint Barnabas, born Joseph, was an early Christian. He was moved by the Word and was so committed to preaching the Gospel that he sold all his possessions and gave the money to the apostles; recognizing his commitment, the apostles named him Barnabas, meaning “son of encouragement”. He preached the Gospel and spread the light of Christ in every place he was in. We too seek to encourage our community in this time and place, on each of our spiritual journeys towards Christ. Fasting, prayer, and almsgiving are the pillars of our Orthodox faith and ensures that community outreach and support is a cornerstone of our parishioners. Building fund We are currently looking to raise funds to build our own church building. Our philosophy for a church building is that the building itself reflects the parish, the place and the community it is a part of as aptly stated by Eastern Orthodox architect and art historian, Andrew Gould: “It’s not enough for a building to be merely useful to its owner, or to be solidly and sustainably built for future owners, or to be a pretty edifice for the public to enjoy, or to contribute something new and meaningful as a work of art. It must do all of these things and do all of them really well.”
