Did you know that that 58% of all food produced is wasted or lost, meanwhile, 1 in 5 households in British Columbia go hungry? Making matters worse, the emissions from decomposing organic waste in Canadian landfills currently account for 20% of national methane emissions.

Vancouver Food Runners is seeking volunteer food drivers (Food Rescue Heroes!) to join our network of passionate volunteer drivers. You will pick up excess perishable food from a community donor (bakery, green grocer or restaurant) and distribute it to those who need it most. We have partnered with charitable organizations such as the YWCA, local neighbourhood houses, shelters and schools to help put a stop to hunger right in our very own city.

How is Vancouver Food Runners different?

We use an app to coordinate food runs for our volunteers to access. Once a volunteer claims a food rescue, they can find their way to the donor and their final destination with the push of a button. Be a part of the solution by diverting viable food destined for the landfill and, instead, delivering it into the mouths of Vancouver’s most vulnerable and food insecure.

Join us in putting an end to hunger and bringing us closer to Zero Waste in our city. Download our app now to get started:

Weekly Rescues

Pop-Up Rescues
Pop-up rescues occur on an as needed basis. These are not at pre-determined days and times and you can choose to claim or ignore the rescue.

We are a volunteer-driven organization that relies on the energy, talent, and enthusiasm of thousands of people. Because of your help, we can grow and donate nutritious local produce to people in need of fresh, healthy food. We simply could not accomplish our mission without your hard work as a farm volunteer.

“Volunteering at Gaining Ground is a time for me to escape the urban rat race and reconnect with the earth. There is an amazing sense of satisfaction one gets from transforming a field full of weeds to one of neat rows of lettuce or beets. The setting is beautiful and the camaraderie shared with the farmers and the other volunteers is something I always look forward to.” -Karin C.

“My team really enjoyed it. Well organized, you know how to host volunteers well! My team loved your passion and felt like they had a greater appreciation for farming.” -Vickie B.

From early April through late October, we depend upon thousands of helping hands working outside with us morning and afternoon. Our community of volunteers is broad-based, often including:

Individuals ages 15 and up
Families with children ages 5 and up
Education groups: schools, colleges, alumni, homeschool coops
Religious groups
Community groups: scouts, camps, senior citizens, civic organizations
Special needs groups
Corporate groups

When you arrive, you walk out through the fields to our farm pavilion. You are welcomed and given an introduction to Gaining Ground and our hunger-relief role. Our farmers explain what’s going on at the farm and the tasks they’ve lined up, based on the the skills and abilities of that day’s volunteers. Then, you work alongside our staff—planting, mulching, cultivating, harvesting, washing… At the end of your visit, our farm staff returns with you to the pavilion to share observations and experiences.

Examples of possible responsibilities include:
Individual Donors
a. Identify potential donors
b. Assist in requesting funds
Event Planning Assistant
a. Work with staff to plan aspects of special events
b. Assist with planning
c. Assist with setup and running event

Having dedicated help in planning and running events & in reaching out to new potential donors would really expand our resources and support. For a small team, planning events and making time for donor recruitment is a struggle. Program demands take precedents and lack of skill and experience in fundraising and event planning holds us back.

There is a wonderful program popping up in cities all around the U.S. where mutual aid groups are getting volunteers to donate space and refrigerators in areas to provide access to free meals and ingredients that houseless or food insecure people might not otherwise be able to get. NW Veg wants to find an army of volunteers to help us stock these fridges with meals and ingredients that are dairy/meat/egg free for folks who cannot or choose not to eat foods with those in it. You can stock it with something as simple as vegan cheeses/milks/babyfood/butter/nut butters/bread, etc or depending on the fridge program you're dropping off to you can make a meal and put it in a to-go container for folks to grab.

To sign up and get information on:
-Which fridges are in your area that need re-stocking
-Current rules and restrictions on what can and cannot be donated
-Protocols on how to safely handle/prepare food
-Recipes for fast and simple vegan dishes that the community has requested

Please email danielle@nwveg.org and we can send you all that info and answer any questions you may have.
