About you
• Excellent communication skills
• Organised and self-motivated
• Passionate about the work of the Trussell Trust
Impact of the role
We cannot state strongly enough how important food donations are to our food banks. Without the boxes, packets and cans of items being regularly donated across the UK we simply wouldn’t be able to run. And as we face an ever increasing demand for our services, so the value of food donations grows. Your food donations will go directly to people in need in your local community, making a direct and real impact.
IMPORTANT: HOW TO ORGANISE A FOOD DRIVE
1. Contact your local Trussell Trust food bank to find out what’s on their most wanted list as well as finding out if there are any items they have a surplus off.
2. Agree the location of your food collection. Make sure you have permission from your manager/community group to host a food drive. Work out with them exactly where the collection will take place – ideally you’re looking for somewhere central like the entrance hall so that it’s as easy as possible for people to find and drop off their donations.
3. Select the dates of your food drive. We advise hosting the food drive for 1 or 2 weeks, so people have a specific amount of time to donate items and it remains fresh in their minds.
4. Make sure you have something to gather the donations in. Speak to your local supermarket and see if they would be able to donate a trolley or basket for the duration of your food drive. Seeing a trolley in the entrance hall can be a great reminder for people to bring in their donations. Decorate the area with our food drive poster.
5. Promote your food drive. Making sure people know about your food drive and what they need to do is absolutely crucial to its success. People like to be informed about how they can make a difference.
6. Make sure you circulate our food list to everyone so they know what to give.
7. Collect items! Having set up your food drive and promoted to all, you can take a break whilst you watch the collections come in. Every few days send a message to all – thanking those who have donated and reminding those yet to do so that there’s still time to give.
After the event
Once your food drive has finished, box or bag up the food as best you can and contact your local foodbank to agree the best day and time for you to drop off the food.
Finally, remember to get in touch with everyone letting them know:
• How much was collected
• Where the food has gone
• How grateful the food bank is for their support.

Emergency Food Network partners with over 80 food pantries, shelters, and hot meal sites in Pierce County. Many of them rely almost entirely on volunteers to keep them running. There truly are tasks for people of all abilities and preferences, including packaging food, guest intake, delivery driving, shelf stocking, data entry, hot meal service, sharing healthy recipes, picking up donations from local stores and restaurants, sorting food, and working curbside to load food into guest vehicles.Due to Covid-19, food pantries are experiencing an increase in guest visits, with some sites seeing twice as many visits as in 2019. While many locations have support from the National Guard, this assistance will gradually be phased out towards the end of July, leaving many volunteers roles waiting to be filled. With pantries located throughout Pierce County, there is bound to be an opportunity that can work with your schedule.
We would love to help you find a food pantry to volunteer with that fits your schedule. Just let us know your preferences, and we will help put you in touch with right pantry so you can get started!

We are in the midst of a planetary crisis with government and world leaders not working fast enough to solve critical issues like climate change, hunger, and the global health epidemic. Change Food is launching a program to encourage residents of local communities to help solve these problems in their own communities.https://www.changefood.org/plant-eat-share/
Plant Eat Share is a creative effort to encourage growing and/or providing healthy food for free in communities around the world. Change Food will aggregate groups and programs already working in some way to provide healthy food for free to communities, as well as host plantings in designated areas across the US and world. Plant Eat Share will template and encourage other communities to adapt and replicate these programs, as well as to develop new ways to grow and offer food for free. This is being done all in an effort to create a global movement of individuals and groups growing food in their community for all to eat and enjoy.
We're looking for pro bono help in building a database, map, action kits, web framework, and an app perhaps (?) so anyone anywhere at any time can have all the resources they need to plant food in public spaces for the community to eat. For free.
We are also seeking researchers and writers to help gather the information - rather than recreate the wheel, we want to aggregate the best of the best already out there and supplement with our own materials once we identify gaps. We want to promote the great work of other groups and to help bring the food, hunger, climate change and other movements together - all in order to help galvanize a planetary movement of global citizens working to solve problems together, from the ground up.
We would also appreciate experienced help in creative fundraising and social media to help fund and market the program around the world.
Thank you for your consideration. We'll only solve the problems facing us today by working together.
