Twice a month during the summer months of June, July and August, groceries are distributed to families in need. Volunteers are needed for handing out the food as the families come in pushing grocery carts we also have started a curb-side service (to give more convenience and privacy). Volunteers can help with the curb side service by loading the groceries in boxes as well as by pushing the grocery cart of groceries out to the families vehicle and loading the groceries in their vehicle. We also need help organizing and inventorying items, checking food expiration dates, sorting, etc... as food items come in to be distributed. All of our volunteers say it is so rewarding helping families with children who need food. 70% of the students in western Canadian County are on free or reduced lunches, this food helps the children be able to have meals at home since they are not eating at school during the summer months when they are on summer break. No child in the United States should be hungry. When children get so excited about food it becomes apparent they have not been receiving good, nourishing food which is something most of us take for granted.Available Shifts

We are in need of 15 volunteers to help unload the mail trucks that are filled with donated food as they come into the post office from their mail routes. This is a child friendly event as long as the child is accompanied by an adult. We anticipate collecting between 12,000 and 20,000 pounds of food. We rely on this food drive to keep our food pantry going through the summer (when typically food donations drop). We feed approximately 800 people per month.Available Shifts

The South Texas Juvenile Diabetes Association runs a specialized food pantry for families with or at risk for developing diabetes. A huge element in successful diabetes management is nutrition. For many families healthy eating can pose a great financial strain. South Texas Juvenile Diabetes Association has started a specialized food pantry. The first of its kind in the Rio Grande Valley. Our aim is to offer families that do not have the means, healthy and nutritious food to add to their diets. The specialized food pantry was created to bridge a gap for families that would truly benefit from an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables as well as education on clean eating and cooking. This will give these families an advantage in preventing type 2 diabetes or in other cases to better manage their diabetes. It will take a community to combat diabetes in our children and we ask you to join us in the effort. We have over 5,000 children in the Rio Grande Valley that live every day with type 1 and type 2 diabetes and there is new diagnosis all the time.
STJDA is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating and supporting families with children who have diabetes in the Rio Grande Valley. This past year there has been an increase in the number of children who have been diagnosed with Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes within Hidalgo County. Therefore, it has become even more urgent and vital that we increase our effort to combat this disease as well as help those children living with the disease.
