Feeding America's Hungry Children collaborates with a host site (Church, School or civic group) who provides between 20 and 40 volunteers and identify s people in the community who will come and select up to 60 lbs of produce that they will deliver to people they have identified who are in need. A semi load of 7 to 15 varieties of fresh fruits and vegetables is set up on tables where the community agents can select the produce they will distribute to people in need in their community.

This is the moment we've all been waiting for! April signifies the official start of the growing season at Elk Run Farm. The days are longer, the weather is warming and our crops are ready to grow.

Ever want to get your hands dirty and learn how to grow edible plants, but don't know where to start? Our weekly volunteer parties are right up your alley. These will be held every Saturday, 10am-2pm throughout the month of April and May. You can expect to do a variety of farming tasks, like direct seeding, transplanting, watering, harvesting and keeping those weeds at bay all with the guidance and direction of our farm and field manager. Check our Facebook for each week's activities.

Are you new to Elk Run Farm? Join us for our New Volunteer Orientations held on the first Saturdays of each month, 9-11AM. This will be a two-hour long introductory space where we show you who we are, what we do, specific tasks that we need extra support with, and a taste of what our volunteer parties are like. If you are enjoying yourself, feel free to stay longer and continue volunteering! The first orientation will be on May 5th.

Our parties will continue rain or shine so please keep an eye on the weather and wear appropriate clothing or rain gear. Don't forget your reusable water bottle and a snack or lunch.

Elk Run Farm grows fresh fruits and vegetables for the South King County Food Coalition. We believe all residents of South King County should have equal access to local, sustainably-grown, and nutritious produce regardless of income. Located in Maple Valley, the farm helps to increase availability of healthy foods for families that visit the food banks while providing an outdoor classroom for the broader community.

Part of our mission at Ronald McDonald House is to provide a comfortable place to stay for families of seriously ill children receiving treatment in the Charleston area. To reach this goal, we look to the community to provide help and support. An important part of this mission is to provide our families with every convenience we can.

Families need and look forward to a well-balanced meal after a long day at the hospital. As a volunteer with our Meal Program, you can help reduce some of the incredible stress experienced by the families with something as fundamental as a home cooked meal.

You can help by either cooking a meal at our House or bringing in prepared food from a restaurant or packaged food from a grocery store. Fresh fruits and vegetables are always welcome.

Opportunity Details

Groups and individuals work together to sort and/or pack produce, non-perishable foods, and household items, preparing them for distribution. Duties may include checking for expiration dates, opened packages and spoilage, labeling cans, and packing bags of food or household items. Other duties may include general cleaning of the area, breaking down boxes etc. This project is fun and rewarding for both adults and children.

We are a food pantry serving the South Suburban Cook county communities. We accept deliveries every Thursday morning from the Greater Chicago Food Depository which requires unloading, unpacking, sorting, and stocking our shelves in preparation for distribution on Friday mornings. We need volunteers to assist us with efforts.
