L’Arche Portland is a community of people with and without intellectual disabilities who share life together. We value meaningful relationships and have always relied on dedicated volunteers to help provide a wide circle of support around our two homes, to open themselves to new relationships and learning opportunities, and to help us be a sign of hope in the larger community. Much of the beauty that happens within L’Arche Portland rests on the efforts of volunteers, and we ask you to consider if you are ready and willing to open your heart and join us. L’Arche Portland give witness to the reality that persons with disabilities possess inherent qualities of welcome, wonder, spontaneity, and friendship. Come and experience acceptance. Come and be changed.Offered most months, we invite volunteers into one of our homes to learn more about the L'Arche Portland community. New volunteers will be welcomed by our community coordinator to share their interests and match gifts and interests to our needs. We share basics about person-first language, communication guidelines, mission and spirituality, and volunteer roles and expectations. We will then transition into "Dessert with L'Arche" where we welcome volunteers, donors, friends and others over a community activity, conversation and dessert. A board member, housemates with and without intellectual disabilities, and our executive director and/or director of development are present to welcome you.
“Community is not built upon heroic actions, but rather upon the love shown in the little things of daily life.”
-- Jean Vanier, founder of L’Arche

The Blueberry Fields Community Garden puts a fresh new take on urban gardening to help those in the community who are less fortunate - single parent families who are living in poverty and facing homelessness. The volunteer-based garden program is a match made in heaven for corporate teams willing to put their green thumbs to great use so that the lower income families served by Home Suite Hope have access to fresh, healthy foods.
The garden is the brainchild of Ken Stockstill, agricultural enthusiast and long time site superintendent of the Upper Oakville Shopping Centre in Oakville, Ontario.
If you can volunteer your time to assist with planting, weeding and watering, it would be greatly appreciated. The centre has already began the process of buying seeds and contacting local garden centres to get in kind donations.
We hope you and your team will lend a hand by volunteering or donating to the cause.
For more information on Blueberry Fields visit www.homesuitehope.org.

Do you have some free time during the day? If so, you might want to help us "rescue" food from going to waste.Food Finders owes much of its continued success to our dedicated network of volunteers! Everyone who is involved, whether on a regular or occasional basis, has a role in reducing hunger and is essential to sustaining our program. As little as an hour of your time a month or week can make a huge difference. We have no age restriction, although kids under 16 must be joined by a parent or guardian.
Each year, we save an estimated 12 million pounds of food from being thrown away, and instead it is "redirected" to help feed people without money for food.
