Cultivating CommunityThe Sustain Supper provides an opportunity for the community to come together, enjoy a farm to table organic dinner and listen to inspiring speeches.
Volunteering at this unique event offers a meaningful experience for volunteers to attend a special evening at the farm and get to know more about our programs.
The August 24th Sustain Supper will be featuring, Jonathan Franzen, novelist, essayist, journalist, translator, and screenwriter, as the Keynote Speaker.
Jonathan Franzen's great loves are literature and birds, and his most recent book, The End of the End of the Earth is a passionate argument for both. Jonathan has been a frequent visitor to the HGP farm to watch birds. Time magazine has called Franzen the "Great American Novelist" and NY Times referred to his "crackling genius."

Leslie is the homeowner who is elderly and works at the Area Office on Aging. She has a PhD and spent many of her working years abroad contracted out by the government. She moved back into the home when her parents' health began to decline and has remained ever since. She has received complaints from some neighbors because of the state of the exterior of her home. She cannot afford the repairs without our help. The scope of work includes a flat roof replacement (contracted out), and an ABWK. The house is stucco, so we will not be scraping the home, but power washing it to remove loose paint. We will then prime and paint the house. We will be replacing some of the wood trim around windows and a couple of wooden planter boxes hanging below the windows.Dates: Wednesday July 17 and Thursday July 18
Times: 9:00am-12:00pm and 12:00pm-3:00pm

We are dedicated to ending homelessness. The factors that contribute to homelessness are complex – mental illness, disability, poverty and the lack of affordable housing. But the solution is so very simple – housing. We are proud of our accomplishments in the fight to end homelessness. Last year, we housed 240 adults, children and veterans in our supportive housing programs. Our very successful Homeless Outreach team reached out to those living on the streets and in other places unfit for human habitation and helped 80% secure housing to end their homelessness. The work we do is effective – 97% of those housed do not return to homelessness. We are excited to share that on April 30, the South Side Office of Concern launched a new brand and officially changed our name to Phoenix Community Development Services (Phoenix). Our services and commitment have not changed. The new name and new tagline, Changing Perspectives, Providing Solutions, simply more effectively communicate the current scope of our work and role as a leader and an innovator.
Phoenix has held a popular dinner theatre fundraising event for many years. On Friday, August 9, we are thrilled to be returning to the Barn III Dinner Theatre for a special performance of G. I. Jukebox, a night of good old American entertainment. We expect to have over 200 guests and invite you to be a part of this exciting event as an event volunteer.
Can we count on you? When you support Phoenix’s efforts to end homelessness, you also:
• Provide a mother with a safe place to put her children to bed at night.
• Help a veteran manage his PTSD and learn how to function in society again.
• Improve the health, well-being and stability of a family in crisis.
We appreciate your consideration! If you have any questions or need any additional information at all, please contact us. We look forward to hearing from you.
