Florence Crittenton Programs of South Carolina (FCP) is actively seeking dynamic leaders to serve on our board. For more than 120 years, FCP has been serving one of the most vulnerable populations in South Carolina: pregnant/parenting girls and at-risk young women. Last year, we provided safe housing, educational services, career development opportunities, and life skills training to more than 100 young women and their children. The next several years promise to be exciting ones as we expand programming to meet the changing needs of our clients. The Board of Directors will play a central role in this important work.
Board Member Qualities:
- demonstrate strength in analyzing and forecasting financial information: we have major capital needs that require sound financial planning
- have an understanding of the impacts of trauma and poverty on the community we serve
- adhere to the non-political, non-religious focus of our work
- approach their roles as strategic thinkers helping to guide the future of the organization and its programming
- influence giving and contributions of major donors
Board Member Commitment
The board meets 6 times per year, with committee meetings in the off months. Committees include Fundraising, Special Events, Executive, Risk, Government Affairs, Capital Projects, and Finance. Board members are expected to attend and support 3 annual special events. Board members are expected to prioritize giving to FCP and contribute generously based on their individual ability.
We believe that having directors of diverse gender, race, and ethnicity, along with varied skills and experiences, contributes to a balanced and effective Board. We strongly encourage former FCP program participants and others with a connection to our program to apply.
FCP is one of 26 members of the National Crittenton family of agencies. The agencies work collaboratively on national research, communication, and advocacy efforts designed to improve the well-being of girls and young women through more effective policy and practices. The family of agencies have served more than 10 million people since the beginning of the Crittenton social welfare movement in 1883.

The Wish Project’s mission is to help families in need establish long-term residency by providing basic needs to provide critical immediate assistance to homeless families, victims of fire or disaster; and to support the community. Our goal is to provide local people in need with basic furniture, home goods and baby goods, while helping the planet by recycling used goods. Only when people have their basic needs met can they move forward and out of the social services system. By providing basic goods to people in crisis, we help alleviate some stress in the short term while helping to end homelessness in the long term. We serve with a passionate team of staff, volunteers, community partners, and board of directors. With such a small staff, we rely heavily on volunteers to help ensure that the day to day tasks of the warehouse get completed and the needs of our clients are always met. Volunteers help with tasks such as sorting and organizing donations, assisting clients, assisting donors, assembling project gifts, and helping out in our thrift shop. We are so thankful for the amazing volunteers who help us help members of the community in need.

Our 501c3 non-profit organization has been featured in over 300 media outlets nationally over the last year. We provide free lawn care to elderly and other people who need it through our volunteer network. In order to build on this momentum, feedback received from peers suggests exploring the option of opening a for-profit division catering to landscapers for people who have the means -- which can contribute towards growing the non-profit still as the central focus?Just looking to explore the idea and if it's worth the effort. Weigh pros and cons, Steps required, etc.
