Corporate on-site projects include hosting breakfast or dinner for the families, deep-cleaning communal spaces, and other "done in a day" projects. Corporate teams can also host activities for the families, such as a BBQ or Holiday activity. Off-site projects consist of assembling care packages, organizing a donation drive, or preparing meals for our families. Additionally, we have funded projects that can help with volunteer time as well as a direct financial contribution. This kind of help is invaluable to us and can strengthen the corporate relationship in the community. Please email our Chief Community Engagement Officer Karen Banks at kbanks@familyhouseinc.org to partner.Who is Family House?
Family House is a 501(c) (3) not-for-profit organization providing temporary housing to families of seriously ill children receiving treatment at the University of California San Francisco Benioff Children's Hospital. Qualifying families live more than 50 miles from UCSF, and many live at or below the low-income status as determined by UCSF. Our location sustains nearly a 100% occupancy rate and can accommodate 240 people per night. Over the course of a year we serve more than 4,000 individuals. Since we receive no financial support from UCSF, or any other public entity, Family House relies solely on the generous contributions of individuals, foundations and corporations. Attached please find a postcard describing Family House and the services we provide. Family House opened a brand new facility built from the ground up in May 2016 in Mission Bay. Nancy and Stephen Grand Family House will include 80 bedrooms, a family atmosphere, communal kitchens, living rooms, teen room, exercise room, family parking, and a private 3,200 square foot outdoor courtyard. The new building more than doubles the organization’s capacity at its two former locations on Irving Street and 10th Avenue in San Francisco’s Inner Sunset neighborhood. Now more than ever we will be needing help from our community partners to sustain our operations and helping so many more family each year.

Vaulting is most often described as gymnastics on a horse. Therapeutic vaulting has all the known benefits of therapeutic riding, such as increased balance, coordination, strength, confidence, plus the added benefits of teamwork, trust, and creativity. The job of a vaulting spotter includes supervising activity, helping vaulters practice their moves, making basic positional corrections, leading strengthening drills and physically spotting the vaulter with dismounts etc. Volunteers with horse experience can be trained to lunge the horse, keeping it at a steady rhythm for vaulters, constantly reading the horse to prevent any mishaps from occurring.

Horse handlers are responsible for leading the horses for the riders during their lessons. This position is directly responsible for the safety of the rider and the horse at all times. To properly and safely lead the horse, a leader must keep their rider’s and side walker’s safety in mind by communicating with both the rider and side walker when necessary and following the instructor’s directions. You will help the student focus on the instructor’s cues, and aide the rider only when necessary by cueing the horse. Volunteers should always help to promote as much of the rider’s independence as possible. Leaders must pay attention, and always be aware of their surroundings and potential hazards (vehicles, other horses, other people, objects, etc.) and must act safely and accordingly.Establishing positive relationships with the riders, instructors, volunteers and other staff is a requirement of this position.

Side walkers are directly responsible for both the rider’s safety, as well as assisting the rider during their lesson. This position helps the student focus on the instructor’s cues, and aides the rider only when necessary. Volunteers should always help to promote as much of the rider’s independence as possible. Side walkers may sometimes be asked to help physically hold and balance a rider using a number of different side walking “holds” (to be taught at the training). Situations may also arise where an emergency dismount is required, upon which the side walker will perform such duties with the assistance and direction of the instructor and/or other volunteers.
