The annual New Vision for Independence Dining in the Dark event is a unique experience to raise awareness about blindness and raise funds for our local non-profit serving people of all ages with low vision or blindness and their families in Lake and Sumter Counties and The Villages. Attendees experience food, drink and conversation as they may never have before – without their sight. The meal will be served in complete darkness and the Lake County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team, as part of a training exercise, will serve guests while wearing their night vision goggles. Prior to the dinner, attendees enjoy the silent auction and cash bar. We need help setting up the event and staffing the silent auction.

Together, we’ll assemble 300 early learning kits to support families and promote education throughout our region in continuation of our MLK Day Service Project. These kits will be distributed to several local schools, helping to empower young learners and foster brighter futures.

Dr. King once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” This is your opportunity to answer that call by volunteering to create a meaningful impact in the lives of children and families in our community.

Volunteers will help United Way of the Lakeshore with the following:

Cut paper and prepare materials for activities
Use markers and glue for assembling crafts
Make homemade playdough to include in the kits

This is a fun, hands-on opportunity for individuals, families, and groups! All materials will be provided, and no special skills are needed—just your enthusiasm to help.
