Ekal Canada is a registered Canadian charity engaged in the basic education of tribal, indigenous children in rural India and Nepal. Ekal runs 80,000 schools that help educate over 2 million underprivileged children in rural, remote parts of India. It is the largest grassroots movement for rural education in the world.Volunteer with any of the Ekal Canada regional chapters or Head Office and work on raising awareness, fundraising, social media, local community events, website maintenance, support groups, news and events, youth engagement, donor outreach, corporate outreach etc. A contribution of CAD $700 helps run one Ekal school for an entire year, educates 30 children and has a positive impact on 30 rural families.
The Ekal movement aims to eradicate illiteracy from tribal areas of India and Nepal through rural development based on the criteria of equality, diversity and inclusion across all sections of society. Ekal's mission is the holistic empowerment of villages through basic education, culture, digital literacy, skill development, health awareness, sustainable agricultural practices and rural entrepreneurship.
At the time of independence, India’s literacy rate was a staggering 11%. Since then, it has made tremendous strides in educating its people. Present day, the literacy rate stands at 68% for the indigenous and rural Indian population - well below the world average literacy rate of 84%. The tribal inhabitants live in remote areas, far from major cities. Those areas are highly deprived of basic amenities, modern facilities for youth and even basic infrastructure. In this scenario, the Ekal movement emerged as the most pragmatic solution to this national need.
Ekal Vidyalaya Foundation of Canada, a not-for-profit organization, was registered as an Ontario Corporation in 2006 and attained Canadian charitable status in 2007. Charity Registration Number (Canada): 853421162RR0001. Ekal is now active in over 10 countries including the United States of America, Germany, Italy, Thailand, UAE, New Zealand, Britain and Australia. Ekal is a one teacher school project primarily in the remote tribal villages where often there are not even the basic necessities of life such as roads, hospitals, schools, clean water etc. A school consists of 25 to 40 children and there are no formal school buildings. Classes are held under a tree, in a verandah, or wherever else is available. A blackboard, teacher and students form the class room. Ekal has regional chapters located in Toronto (GTA), Winnipeg, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Regina, Kingston, Sarnia, London Ontario, Windsor, Ottawa etc.

At 26 Letters we offer medical funds and humanitarian aid packages but we are still a young NGO and our resources are quite limited. To guarantee the well-being of all families, collaborations with other NGOs and associations are essential. The well-being department, or the “caring grandparents” as we call them, guarantees that our families are assisted in every possible way through our own programs or through referrals. When we are contacted by a family that either needs assistance in an area out of our scope or that lives outside Beirut, our caring granparents ensure that they are referred to another organization that can provide such help. While our team in Beirut works on purchasing, assembling and distributing our survival packages in Beirut, our online-based volunteers work on searching for alternative and collaborative ways to help.
Our caring grandparents protect our families and provide them with the love and care that they deserve.

ENGLISH:Volunteering in a Finance Department can sound boring, but at 26 Letters it is quite the opposite. Our finance team, or “26 Letters’ Rich Aunts” as we call ourselves, are the funniest team you will ever find! Besides, 26 Letters is only possible thanks to the amazing work of the team. On the moment, our finance team is working very hard on ensuring that our families receive our humanitarian aid boxes each month. These boxes contain the food, medicines, sanitary and hygiene products and baby products that they need to survive every month. Our aim is to deliver these packages every month to a total of 700 people while starting to incorporate another 1000 people that are currently waiting to be included in the program.
The department’s main objective is simple: to establish collaborations and find the necessary funding to deliver these packages. The means of achieving this are completely up to the creativity of our volunteers! Every two weeks, the team gathers at an online meeting to share and put forward new ideas. After the meeting, each volunteer stablishes their own objectives, as well as the time they are going to invest in fulfilling said objective and whether they will do it independently or collectively.
26 Letters’ rich aunts work from all around the world and they each have different skills and interests. This is what makes the department so interesting and ever-changing. Join the team and realise how far an idea can go!
