Court Appointed Special Advocates, CASA, is a local non profit which uses community volunteers to advocate on behalf of abused and neglected children in the family court system. CASA volunteers visit with the child monthly, meets with all people involved in that child's life (biological parents, foster parents, teachers, doctors, therapists) and collect records about the family and child. With all of this information, CASA volunteers make recommendations to the court in regards to the child's best interest. CASA volunteers stay involved with a child until they achieve permanenecy which is on average 1.5 years. Current CASA volunteers work on average 5-10 hours a month on their case, which mainly involves visiting with the child. CASA volunteers are often one of the only constant people involved in a child's life as they move from foster home to foster home.To become a volunteer, you have to be at least 21, not a foster parent, consent to background checks and attend a one off 30 hour training. The pre-service training is held 4 times a year!

Nearly ten years ago, the Bucks County Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) was established to redefine how Bucks County confronts the issue of child abuse. Since that time, the CAC has helped thousands of child victims and their families heal from the pain inflicted by child abuse. To illustrate the importance of the work that we do, I want to share a story with you."In 2012 our family made the decision to become foster parents and we were placed with our two oldest children, Jean* (4.5 y.o.) and Dan* (4 weeks old). After being placed with Jean, we noticed she would not allow my husband to hug, touch, or put her to bed. We thought it was just because she was adjusting to her transition; then we noticed it was not just my husband, but males in general. We discussed this concern with our caseworker and she recommended starting counseling for Jean. Jean had started seeing a NOVA counselor, and during a session she disclosed a member of her biological family had touched her inappropriately. After the abuse was reported, I had no idea what was going to happen next and remember thinking to myself, 'this child has already been through so much.' I spoke with her caseworker and decided we would be using the Bucks County CAC to do an interview with Jean. By doing so, Jean would not have to tell her story over and over again to several different people, everyone would be in one place at one time. Angela from the CAC called me later that day to schedule us for the interview and went through every detail of the interview so I knew what to expect. She was able to calm my nerves and answer all of my questions.
At the CAC, the interviewer took time getting Jean to feel comfortable before taking her back to the interview room. While the interview was going on, I spent time with an advocate discussing my concerns and talking about what would happen next. Jean did not open up about her abuse during the interview, so there was no moving forward legally for us, however I feel that this was closure for her. For the first time in Jean’s life she felt someone listened, cared about what happened, and wanted to make sure she was safe.
Since then, we have adopted both Jean and her brother Dan, as well as another little boy Max*. Jean has graduated from counseling and is doing wonderful! She loves school, art, animals, music and hanging out with her friends. She is the total opposite of the child we were first placed with, and now shows affection to her dad. She has really has come a long way since everything came to light. The CAC helped to give her a voice and help her heal from the abuse she experienced. No child or family should ever have to experience child abuse, but if they do, having the Bucks County Children’s Advocacy Center available to them can make a world of difference. "
The incidents of child abuse throughout the country continue to increase, and with over 800 child abuse reports each year, the children of Bucks County are no exception. The Bucks County CAC, a program of Network of Victim Assistance (NOVA), is improving how professionals respond to child abuse cases by providing a child-friendly setting where a skilled team of professionals come together under one roof to investigate serious allegations of child abuse, conduct forensic interviews, aid in the prosecution of offenders, and connect children and families with therapy and victim assistance services - while always keeping the best interest of the child in mind.
On Friday, September 28, 2018, the Bucks CAC will be hosting its 6th Annual Coach for a Cause Coach Bag Bingo Event at St. Anne’s Ukrainian Church Bingo Hall to help raise the critical funds needed to support child abuse victims in Bucks County. Last year 375 people attended the event, helping to raise over $19,000. This year we are hoping to raise even more! Our goal is $25,000!

Operation Homefront is holding a Back-to-School Brigade for 1,000 military children on Ft. Campbell. Children will receive backpacks full of school supplies. The Back-to-School Brigade is a critical program that meets vital needs by providing backpacks and school supplies for military children. Every year, these families look forward to and depend on the backpacks and school supplies they receive from the Back-To-School Brigade program in order to help them prepare for the new school year. The cost for military families preparing for a new school year can be overwhelming, especially for those that have several children. Many of our military families are struggling and living paycheck to paycheck, so this program is critical to help eliminate financial stressors with starting school. With the support of our donors and partners, Operation Homefront’s Back-To-School Brigade helps relieve families of this cost and enabling them to use their income for other household expenses.

Toys make every child feel better and when you are a sick child, it is extra special to have a gift. To know someone is thinking about you by offering a small token, can often make a big difference when a child is feeling down due to an illness. On July 27, the Future Scholars Foundation will bring toys to Children’s of Mississippi, part of the University of Mississippi Medical Center. We believe that by providing toys to theses children it will provide them with comfort as well as distract them from the fear of being hospitalized. Giving a child toys during there stay can possibly reduce their stress level and potentially help them during their healing process. This is why donating toys is important to our organization because we want these children to have a comfortable and stress free stay during their time of healing.Available Shifts
