We are actively seeking KidStart volunteer mentors in the New Westminster and Surrey area to be assigned to a child, age 6-12.Mentoring changes a young person’s life because it brings out their gifts. Once they find their gifts, they discover how to succeed. A mentor helps keep them on the path to following their dreams. Because of this, early intervention has been recognized as a highly effective way of addressing the living circumstances that can lead kids into difficult situations. Mentoring guides young people out of these situations.
Being a volunteer mentor with KidStart doesn’t require special skills, just common sense and a positive attitude. It means spending a couple hours each week of your time with a young person. You will be helping a child/youth to grow, thrive and connect with the community they call home.

We are seeking volunteers to provide transportation for students in Arts Connect, our community-based program for girls who are involved with the Pierce County Juvenile Court. Some of the girls are in diversion/on probation and others are in dependency, or foster care. The program consists of quarterly 10-week sessions in glass, ceramics, photography, printmaking, or other art forms. A team of adults, including professional artists, leads these weekly, three-hour classes at community sites, with support from court officers and volunteers.Hands-on projects are generated from group discussions and writing activities about identity, society, and healthy lifestyles. A family-style dinner is served and girls can arrive early for snack, homework help, or to talk with mentors about the week’s ups and downs.
We are in need of drivers and riders as there must be two adults with the participants. Transportation volunteers are critical to the program's success! Whether you can commit to the whole session, or just one week, we need your help.
Volunteer drivers must be 21 or older but riders only need to be at least 18 years old. Volunteers must be female and pass a background check through Pierce County Juvenile Court. Volunteers are required to use Court vehicles to drive girls to and from class. Classes are held on Tuesdays or Wednesdays from 4 to 6:30 pm at a local Tacoma school. Volunteers are invited to stay through class and become a part of the class community, however at times, volunteers have also used class time to read, do homework or personal work.

Children in Placement-CT, Inc. is a non-profit organization that trains local volunteers to advocate for abused and neglected children in foster care. Our volunteers are trained to be Guardians ad Litem (GALs) and are assigned to 1-2 cases, acting as the eyes and ears of the court while evaluating the needs of the child and helping the child find a safe, permanent home. Volunteer work as a GAL includes visiting the child in their foster home monthly, consulting with professionals in the child's life such as teachers and therapists, exploring potential resources for the child, and advocating for the child's best interests in court. GALs do not need to be attorneys or have any other specific educational or professional backgrounds.
Research indicates that children with a GAL volunteer are significantly less likely to languish in long-term foster care and are less likely to re-enter foster care later. For many abused children, their GAL volunteer allows them to feel heard and is a source of consistency in their tumultuous lives.
Requirements:
Be 21 years or older
Commit to 2 years of service
Have access to a car
Participate in a 40 hour training
Submit to a background check
Have basic computer skills
To participate in this amazing opportunity, please contact us or fill out the volunteer application at: https://childreninplacement.org/volunteer/

Henrico CASA trains volunteers to help our county's most vulnerable children thrive in safe, loving homes. These volunteers are called Court Appointed Special Advocates, aka CASAs, because they are appointed by judges serving in the Henrico County Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court to speak up for the best interests of children experiencing possible abuse and/or neglect.CASAs build a relationship with the child, gather information, and collaborate with professionals in order to make a recommendation to the court.
Without an advocate, hundreds of abused and neglected children would not have a strong voice in their corner. Will you join us in our mission to ensure every abused child has a voice?
Volunteers attend at least 40 hours of pre-service training. Trainees learn about the court process, the social service system, child development and educational advocacy, the family dynamics of domestic violence, the realities of substance abuse, and the special needs of children who have been abused and neglected by their caregivers. At "graduation," CASAs become sworn in as officers of the court.
Many children are waiting for advocates, so new volunteers are likely to be assigned a case very quickly after the completion of training.
