At the end of each Girls on the Run season/semester, Girls on the Run Hampton Roads holds a celebratory end-of-season 5k event. At the end of the Girls on the Run season, the girls participate in a Girls on the Run 5k event along with an adult "Running Buddy."
This celebratory, non-competitive event is the culminating experience of the curriculum.
The girls set running goals over the course of the program, which helps prepare them for the final event. Completing the 5k gives the girls a tangible understanding of the confidence that comes through accomplishment as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals. Crossing the finish line is a defining moment when the girls realize that even the seemingly impossible IS possible. The learning goals the girls gain are the following: to complete a 5k (we foster a mastery -climate rather than a competitive climate); to think about how we are strong mentally, emotionally, and physically; to set a goal for the end-of-the-season 5k; and to learn that hard work allows us to set a goal and accomplish it. The target life skills they are taught include, but are not limited to the following: competence, confidence , and connection.

The 5K is a family-friendly event and brings together girls from close to 100 schools/community centers throughout Hampton Roads including Franklin, Gates County, NC, Isle of Wight, and Smithfield-- to name a few rural areas. The girls are from all socio-economic groups, varying abilities, and all ethnicities and religions-- they truly reflect the diversity and inclusion of our rich Hampton Roads community. The 5k event includes a fairgrounds with food, face painting, a bounce house, happy hair, arts and crafts, community outreach, and fun for all before the race begins. It truly is a celebratory event. The girls also receive a professional 5k medal for completing the 5k.

In addition, girls who have raised $100 in the Super Hero Cape Campaign, a girl-to-girl (peer-to-peer) fundraising campaign that scholarships other girls into the program the next season, receive their Super Hero Cape in a formal ceremony at the 5k. They even have the option to wear their cape during the race. The cape is unique each season and is tied to the 5k's theme. This spring's 5k theme is a mermaid theme and reflects the vibrant life-style and culture of the Virginia Beach community. The Super Hero Cape Campaign is a program teaches the girls about compassion, paying it forward, and the importance of being connected to their community and others.

As you can see, the Girls on the Run Hampton Roads Fall 2024 5k is far more than a race. For our girls, it's a marathon of life lessons that is truly transformational.
