We are actively seeking KidStart volunteer mentors in the North Shore area to be assigned to a child, age 6+.Mentoring changes a young person’s life because it brings out their gifts. Once they find their gifts, they discover how to succeed. A mentor helps keep them on the path to following their dreams. Because of this, early intervention has been recognized as a highly effective way of addressing the living circumstances that can lead kids into difficult situations. Mentoring guides young people out of these situations.
Being a volunteer mentor with KidStart doesn’t require special skills, just common sense and a positive attitude. It means spending a couple hours each week of your time with a young person. You will be helping a child/youth to grow, thrive and connect with the community they call home.

With over 10,000 children in attendance at our Backpack Outreach events, we were only able to give away 4000 Backpacks and school supplies last year. This year, we endeavor to surpass that by giving away 10,000 Backpacks and School Supplies to children who need your help. Here is how you can help:
1. Use your social media network and contacts to help drive awareness about the need that Metro Atlanta children have which is to have a Backpack full of supplies in order to be more effective at school. If you push this message out to your network, hopefully someone would donate.
2. Participate as a Retail Greeter. A retail Greeter hands out the School Supply wish list at the local store host and encourage patrons to purchase the items and drop them in your box.
3. Pack and Sort (at the Marietta/Atlanta office only). Once all the supplies and Backpacks arrive, there is a need to separate the items and pack them in the bags. This will be done on Saturdays in July (except the week of the 4th).
4. Assist with Day of Event Distribution at Bradford Community on July 30th 12-3pm OR at Atlanta Heights Charter School July 31st 5pm-7pm.
5. Personally donate and sponsor a certain number of backpacks (1, 5, 10, *25 backpacks) each bag is $6 each and/or ask your employer if the company would like to sponsor a certain number of backpacks.

General Supervision1. Visually scan all areas of the classroom/play area continuously.
2. Continuously move about your assigned area.
3. Look for potential problems before they happen.
EXAMPLES: Children having a heated argument that might erupt into a
fight; a game which is beginning to get rough; a child who is dominating a
game to the frustration of others; glass or other dangerous objects on
playground; groups of children just standing or moving as a group.
4.When a child complains to you, look into the problem even if it seems
petty at first. Talk it out with them and try to get them to solve their own problem.
(NOTE: If a child has reported something of a serious nature such as
hitting, foul language or racial slurs, investigate immediately. And if necessary bring child to Director.)
5.It is not necessary for an adult to witness a problem before action is
taken. When an incident occurs fill out incident report.
6.Check the bathroom frequently but do not leave the class area unless
another adult is supervising; notify Director of needed supplies and
maintenance.
7.Avoid all but the briefest conversations. Ask children and adults
supervising not to distract you by “visiting” while you are supervising.
Encourage “chronic” visitors to enter a game with their peers.
DISCIPLINE
1. Save Director referrals for extreme behavior, such as the following:
a. fighting
b. defiance of you or other adult
c. destroying property
d. obscenities/profanity
e. dangerous substance or item
f. repeated non-severe problems after 2 or 3 warnings/"talking to's" refer to Director.
2. Solve as many problems as possible without a punishment.
EXAMPLES:
a. Two children are arguing over who is first in line. Tell them you
will think of a number between one and ten. The one who gets the
closest is in front.
b. Two children are unable to get along one day. Separate into two different classes even if in the same age group. When one is outside the other is in and we rotate.
c. Children are arguing over whether a child is “out.” Have them play it
over or have them vote and the majority rules.
3.When a consequence is called for, assign a consequence such as one
of the following:
a. benching for a portion or all of the free time;
b. making the child follow you wherever you go for 5 or 10 minutes
without talking to you or others;
c. child who misuses and item cannot use that item for the rest of class
d. child has to sit out of class participation

The Blueberry Fields Community Garden puts a fresh new take on urban gardening to help those in the community who are less fortunate - single parent families who are living in poverty and facing homelessness. The volunteer-based garden program is a match made in heaven for corporate teams willing to put their green thumbs to great use so that the lower income families served by Home Suite Hope have access to fresh, healthy foods.
The garden is the brainchild of Ken Stockstill, agricultural enthusiast and long time site superintendent of the Upper Oakville Shopping Centre in Oakville, Ontario.
If you can volunteer your time to assist with planting, weeding and watering, it would be greatly appreciated. The centre has already began the process of buying seeds and contacting local garden centres to get in kind donations.
We hope you and your team will lend a hand by volunteering or donating to the cause.
