Want to get involved in the Lasagna Love movement?
We would be so excited for you to join other community members helping neighbors who could use a little lasagna love. The pan of lasagna is not just to fill bellies but hearts too. When a family in need receives their pan of deliciousness it is a powerful reminder that they are cared for and their community is there in a time of need. We are no judgement, no questions asked organization. A family in need may be a parent who is stretched thin between work and children who would enjoy a warm with their family; someone who has experienced any type of loss recently; just for the sake of self care and mental health- someone who could just use a break; or any other reason someone could be uplifted. Your home cooked meal brings so much more to the table than a hot dinner for a family.

If you are interested in becoming a Lasagna Chef, signing up is super easy! Head over to lasagnalove.org/volunteer and fill out the form. Follow the guide through and then set your preferences letting us know all we need to know to get you matched! Everything is totally up to you- how often you would like to be matched, how far you would like to deliver, and how many families you would like to help. What ever works for your time and budget is great on our end!

A Family for Every Child (AFFEC) is an Oregon-based 501c3 nonprofit adoption agency that offers a comprehensive, highly technical, child-centered approach to finding loving, permanent families for all children waiting in foster care. AFFEC focuses on finding Forever Families for traditionally “hard-to-place” foster children, such as teenagers, minorities, sibling groups, children with disabilities, and other special needs kids. AFFEC serves families across the PNW, and is licensed in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho.

On February 10, 2022, AFFEC will be hosting our annual black tie gala, this year with a new theme: Home is Where The Heart Is. As we approach the holiday season, our thoughts are often drawn to our families and of warm memories of years past. However, for many children and youth in foster care, this is a difficult time and their memories of the holiday season are not so warm. This year especially, with all of our new challenges we face due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the holiday season may be exponentially harder for children who lack the stability of a home and a family.

AFFEC could not exist without the support and generosity of our donors, and relies on our major events to fund our mission. Home Is Where The Heart Is is our largest fundraiser of the year, and accounts for roughly 25% of our operating budget. Funds raised from the event’s oral and silent auctions go directly to our 11 core programs--which includes our adoption agency, Host Home youth homelessness program, Mentorship Programs, The Heart Gallery, and Matching Assistance Programs.

AFFEC could also not exist without the support of volunteers. Home Is Where The Heart Is needs roughly 50 volunteers to run smoothly, assisting with both pre-event tasks like picking up donations and day-of event tasks like manning the coat check, assisting with registration and check in, helping with the Dessert Dash and Wine Wall, and many other areas. Volunteering with Home Is Where The Heart Is is a fun excuse to dress up, meet new people, and give back to the community. Formal attire is requested, and most shifts are scheduled from 5:00PM to 10:00 PM, with the exception being set up (which runs 11:00AM-3:30PM) and tear down (which runs 9:00PM-Midnight).

Virtually Volunteer with United Way of Metro Chicago by gathering items such as diapers, wipes, baby formula, and a tie blanket. At United Way of Metro Chicago, we believe that the best way to strengthen our communities is to focus on strengthening families. That means supporting our neighbors at the times when they need it most. Caring for a baby is rewarding, but when you don’t have all the resources to adjust to life with a little one, it can also be stressful.
For example, the average baby requires 8-10 diapers a day. With wipes, formula and other necessities, these costs can quickly add up.
Our Baby Kits are a way to supplement some of those items. When you plan a volunteer project to create our Baby Kits, you show a parent/guardian in our community that they are supported and cared-for, so that they can focus on caring for their new baby.
On behalf of United Way of Metro Chicago, thank you for joining us in building stronger neighborhoods, and families, for a stronger Chicago region
