More than 1,500 youth “age out” of the Los Angeles foster care system each year without parents or family to support them in the difficult transition to adulthood. The Alliance for Children’s Rights offers these youth workshops on topics instrumental to achieving and maintaining independence. Previous topics have included goal setting, budgeting, consumer literacy, nutrition, and coping with trauma. The workshops help to fill the learning gaps that often affect foster youth and impact their ability to maintain employment and pursue higher education.

The Alliance is seeking volunteers to develop and lead a life-skills workshop for our young adult clients. You would bring the topic and the expertise, and Alliance staff would partner with you to craft a presentation that is relevant and compelling for the youth we serve. Workshops are held at the Alliance office, with refreshments provided by our team.

Date and time to be set based on volunteer availability. Weekends are preferred. Workshops typically take place the Alliance's headquarters. Free, underground parking is available onsite.

The Alliance for Children’s Rights provides legal aid and services for foster youth in Los Angeles County – the largest foster care system in the country. Clearing barriers to stability and opportunity, we advocate for children and young adults impacted by foster care, so that they can access the support and services they need to thrive.

Each year, on the weekend before Thanksgiving, the Alliance hosts a Thanksgiving celebration for our young adult clients and their families. Together, we enjoy a delicious holiday meal, and every family leaves with a gift basket of helpful items—like toiletries, cleaning supplies, and other essentials—generously provided by our community.
We’re seeking up to 5 volunteers to help fill gift baskets and set-up for the event.

The Alliance for Children’s Rights protects the rights of impoverished, abused, and neglected children and youth by providing free legal and social services for children, young adults, and families involved with the child welfare system. Our pro bono partners are among Los Angeles’ best and brightest attorneys. Together, we advocate for healthcare, education, and financial support for families created by adoption, foster care, and guardianship. With your help, we also address the needs of foster youth leaving care without a permanent family. Through our pro bono attorneys, we have helped more than 170,000 children, youth, and families achieve safe, stable homes over the past three decades. Opportunities for pro bono partnership include:
• Adoption - Pro bono attorneys prepare documentation to finalize adoptions and represent adoptive parents at unopposed hearings. The typical time commitment is 10-15 hours across 2-3 months.
• Probate Legal Guardianship - Pro bono attorneys prepare the petition and represent caregivers at hearing in unopposed cases. The typical time commitment is 15-20 hours across 2-4 months.
• Education Advocacy - Pro bono attorneys negotiate with School Districts and Regional Centers to obtain Individualized Education Programs (IEP) or Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSP). Mediation is occasionally required. The typical time commitment is 30-50 hours across 3-6 months.
• Youth Transitioning Out of Foster Care - Pro bono attorneys mentor and/or assist youth with identity theft, accessing public benefits, taxes, contracts, sealing juvenile records, and clearing tickets and warrants. They also develop and deliver life skills workshops to youth in related areas.
• Foster Care Benefits and SSI - Pro bono attorneys prepare briefs, question experts, and present evidence at administrative hearings. The typical time commitment is 40-60 hours across 4-6 months.
• Impact Litigation, Research, and Policy Work - Pro bono attorneys litigate, research and/or develop policies related to systemic problems in the dependency system.

Cases are extensively screened by the Alliance and supported and supervised by Alliance staff attorneys and directors. Training (1.5 hours), manuals, and sample documents will be made available. Pro bono opportunities are available year-round. Typical time commitments range from 10 - 60 hours over 2 - 6 months.
