Number of Volunteers: 10 – 20

Sponsorship Fee: $1,000*

Availability: We offer snack pack volunteer workshops onsite Monday – Friday. The workshop lasts from 9:00 am – 12:30 pm.

Description: This volunteer workshop gives attendees the opportunity to give back to the community while also gaining in-depth knowledge of homelessness in Los Angeles. You will join us at our San Pedro Street site with 10 – 20 of your colleagues to prepare 100 snack packs, which provide an essential meal for the community members we serve. You will provide sponsorship of $1,000 for the workshop, and DWC will provide ingredients for snack pack assembly. You’ll start the day with an educational presentation on homelessness in Skid Row, hear from a DWC Advocate with lived experience, then you’ll assemble snack packs with your team before taking a tour of our site, including the Day Center and Permanent Supportive Housing. We ask that volunteers are over 18 years old and wear closed-toed shoes and comfortable clothing.

*Please note that this sponsorship fee may change in the coming months and will be updated on the Benevity site as appropriate.

Snack Packs are essential to the community members we serve at DWC. They allow us to ensure that participants have a nutritious meal to take with them before leaving the Day Center. We recommend that groups make 100 snack packs. On our website, you will see that there are a variety of snack packs we recommend making and each one includes a main, a fruit, a snack, and a beverage. We recommend avoiding hard-to-chew fruits, like apples.

Donation Required: We ask that volunteer groups provide all materials and ingredients needed for snack packs.

Availability: We accept snack packs daily between 1:00 and 1:30 pm. Please contact groupvolunteerevents@downtownwomenscenter.org to schedule a drop-off.

🚨 Volunteer Opportunity: Help Transform the Property of a Local Army Veteran 🚨

We’ve been made aware of a meaningful opportunity to assist a disabled Army veteran currently recovering in a rehab facility following recent surgery. With no immediate family around, a kind neighbor stepped up to request help on his behalf.

🏡 The Situation:

The front yard is heavily overgrown, with grass reaching 2–3 feet tall

There are numerous feral cats on the property, creating sanitation concerns

The work will be extensive and hands-on — perfect for those who aren’t afraid to roll up their sleeves

This project isn’t easy — but that’s exactly why it matters. When no one else can step in, that’s when we do. We’re seeking a dedicated group of helpers who are willing to tackle a challenging but deeply rewarding cleanup to bring this veteran’s home back to a livable condition.

🔍 Important Notes:

The request came from a neighbor, so we are working on establishing direct communication with the veteran himself before beginning any work — this is essential for transparency and respect.

Due to the nature of the property, safety precautions will be necessary, and this may not be suitable for all volunteers.

🙌 How You Can Help:
If you’re in or near the West Valley City, Utah area and can assist with mowing, trimming, cleanup, or coordination, we want to hear from you. Whether you’re experienced with yard work or simply want to lend a hand in any way you can, every effort helps.

Let’s show what compassion in action really looks like.

Join us this Earth Day, April 22, 2025, for a one-day volunteer opportunity to help older adults in need with spring yard cleanup - including raking, weeding, trimming, and more!

In partnership with the Township of West Orange, our nonprofit I Want To Mow Your Lawn - which provides free landscaping support to older adults, veterans, and others in need - is organizing this special Earth Day event. We're calling on volunteers to lend a hand beautifying and clearing outdoor spaces for senior residents in the community.

We'll provide:

Rakes, garbage bags, garden gloves (if needed), string trimmers, and other basic equipment
Soft beverages and snacks to keep you fueled throughout the day

Bonus: If you can bring your own equipment (trimmers, mowers), that's always welcome!

Details:

Meet-up Location: West Orange Town Hall Parking Lot, 66 Main Street, West Orange, NJ
Time: 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM
Rain Date: April 30, 2025

What to Bring:

Closed-toed shoes, long sleeves/pants (recommended)
Gardening gloves (if you have them)
A positive attitude - and readiness to get a little dirty!

We’ll group up in the morning and then head out to homes in clusters for yard work. It’s a great way to give back, get outside, and make a real impact.

Please sign up here to volunteer and be part of something meaningful this Earth Day!

Individuals and groups are welcome to participate. Please note: Media coverage may be present at this event, with permission-based participation only for any photos or interviews.

Dementia Support Northwest (formerly Alzheimer Society of Washington) is celebrating the opening of our new office heaquarters and dementia-friendly community center, Amy's Place, with a walkathon fundraiser and open house.
Opening this Spring inside Bellis Fair Mall in Bellingham, Amy's Place will provide a community hub where individuals living with dementia, their care partners, and family can connect with resources, engage in social activities, find support groups, and so much more.
Though we are thrilled to open the doors to the public this Spring, our funding is limited. We will rely on community donations and partnerships to maintian our operations, to keep Amy's Place open and ensure no one walks their dementia journey alone.
