Search and Care, a 49-year-old Upper East Side nonprofit that works to help older adults remain safely and comfortably independent, would love to have you as part of our Connectivity Team.

Our agency’s "Silver Circles" older adult computer education program provides one-on-one and group sessions to help older men and women use technology on varying devices. Due to COVID-19, these sessions are both held virtually and in-person (as long as both client and coach are fully vaccinated and can provide proof).

Location-wise, our client's homes can range from East 72nd St. - E 138th St. and more recently, West 70th St. to W110th St., so we're looking for volunteers who are comfortable with traveling.

We're seeking tech coaches who can help in-person with one or more of the following:

One-On-One Computer Coaching: helping older adults through one-on-one in-person sessions with learning how to use their devices - computers, tablets, smartphones, etc. - in whatever ways fit each client's needs and interests.

Group Assistance: helping older adults connect to our remote groups (both telephonic and via video chat) by helping them understand how to connect to groups, being available during the time of a group to assist one or more clients to get connected, as well as guiding them if they get kicked out of a group or have technical difficulties while participating.

Kindle Fire Coaching: helping older adults learn to use Kindle Fires (on loan from our agency) to get connected via video chat (Zoom, Skype), email, internet browsing, book downloading, Alexa, and more!

To become a Computer/Tech Coach, please email Jacob Gonzalez ( jagonzalez@searchandcare.org) and Michelle Carr ( carr@searchandcare.org), Connectivity Coordinators. In your email, please write a paragraph (e.g. 4-5 sentences) expressing why you are interested in this position.

Please note: We are flexible with whatever time you will be available to coach. We are even open to weekend coaching upon request!

WHAT: Elders in our community are facing a great deal of isolation with COVID-19. A warm, handwritten letter can make their day. We’re looking for several volunteers to commit to at two months of writing weekly, handwritten letters to those in our community.

Volunteers write letters and ACRS will prepare each letter and place them in the food bags that are going to our elderly clients.

Criteria for Letters:

One page is great
Postcards or letters are fine
Please use proper spelling, grammar, and syntax to the best of your ability
Letters should be legible and if it helps, you're absolutely welcome to type on a computer (handwritten letters have a special element to them, but printed letters can also be made to feel very special).
No postage and no envelope necessary (envelopes are sometimes fun to open).
Please do not seal the envelope.
Assume your letter will be ready by ACRS staff.
Absolutely can be written in an API language (Chinese, Vietnamese esp.) but write an English version as well as right now we can't control which client they go to.
Please refrain from putting in any religious, or political views.
Please refrain from sharing your full name, address, email address, phone number, or very specific identifying information.

Tips for letters

At least one page (6 - 12 sentences) will make it seem more special and unique.
You are welcome to write in an API language. Please also write in English.
Think about what you would like to receive
You can ask prompting questions
Share something about your day or something positive
You can also validate how challenging things may be right now

Our 501c3 non-profit organization has been featured in over 300 media outlets nationally over the last year. We provide free lawn care to elderly and other people who need it through our volunteer network. In order to build on this momentum, feedback received from peers suggests exploring the option of opening a for-profit division catering to landscapers for people who have the means -- which can contribute towards growing the non-profit still as the central focus?

Just looking to explore the idea and if it's worth the effort. Weigh pros and cons, Steps required, etc.
