COMMUNITY TECH TUTOR VOLUNTEER

Peel Senior Link enables community-based independent living for seniors who might otherwise require more institutional settings, such as Long-Term Care homes or hospitals. In the 2019-2020 fiscal year, Peel Senior Link provided 24/7 care to 399 individual clients, diverted 121 seniors from going into Long Term Care and diverted 116 Emergency Room visits in Mississauga and Brampton.

Our organization offers Senior Active Living activities and programming to our older adult clients as a way of supporting them to socialize and live happy, active lives in the community. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need to be able to pivot to include virtual program offerings, mitigating isolation for those seniors living with limited means or in remote areas. Technological connectivity allows older adults to stay socially connected and helps them access services and resources needed to maintain independence. Through PSL's Tech Tutor Program, volunteer tutors will be paired with older adults to teach them the basics of using common technology devices and applications. Tutors will meet older adult learners at their residence for one session or multiple sessions, at a mutually agreed upon time, to learn at their own pace, picking up new or improving current technology skills.

The Role:
• The volunteer tutor will connect with the program participant to conduct a needs assessment, determining their current skill level and what technology and skills they hope to learn;
• The volunteer tutor will engage one-on-one with the participant to help them build confidence and proficiency in using computer and/or mobile devices to access online programs and services, connect with family and friends, and access online resources;
• The volunteer tutor will also engage the participant socially therefore the goal of the interaction should be to forge a strong professional but friendly connection;
• The volunteer tutor will maintain strong communications to keep Volunteer Services updated on the interactions with participants.

Skills Required
• Ability and comfort using common technology platforms such as Zoom, YouTube, Gmail, etc… (additional training on supporting older adult learners will be provided);
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills;
• Approachable, encouraging, empathetic;
• Ability to be patient while guiding and supporting older learners;
• Comfortable working in in-person and virtual environments;
• Must have flexible availability;
• Must be 18 years of age or older;
• Must obtain a Vulnerable Sector Check;

To help you be successful in this role, volunteers will be provided with a general volunteer orientation session as well as role-specific training.

Benefits
• An opportunity to provide mentorship;
• An opportunity to use and share your digital literacy skills;
• An opportunity to positively impact the life of an adult learner in your community;
• An opportunity to accumulate volunteer hours.

A minimum commitment of 9 months is required.

For more information, please contact Joelle Berube-Cheng, Community Development Coordinator at joelle@peelseniorlink.com or by calling 905-712-4413 x333.

Performing acts of love is an important way we minister to senior adults. On the third Saturday of each month, we schedule a workday at the home of a select senior adult. These events generally last from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and are ideal for Individuals, families, or small groups to join to perform a variety of activities such as mowing yards, raking leaves, painting, hauling trash or debris and other light maintenance projects.

Volunteers of all ages are welcome and this is a family friendly event. In addition we will engage in conversations with the senior to further strengthen the relationship. Conversations may include prayer and Bible study.
