Volunteers are the backbone of many nonprofit organizations that address the needs of our communities. The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of Blair and Huntingdon Counties (RSVP) recruits volunteers age 55+ and matches them with local organizations at no cost to the volunteer or organizations. RSVP has actively engaged older adult volunteers in Blair and Huntingdon counties since 1972. The program is sponsored by Center for Community Action, a 501(c)(3) organization.Through RSVP, volunteers have the opportunity to continue to use the skills and experiences they have acquired over their lifetime. This helps them remain active while providing much needed support for our communities. They serve at organizations such as Altoona Food Bank, Blair Senior Services, Meals on Wheels of Huntingdon and the VA Medical Center, just to name a few.
In addition to helping older adults find meaningful volunteer opportunities, RSVP provides recognition for the positive impact they have in our communities. RSVP hosts an annual volunteer recognition banquet to honor and celebrate the accomplishments of the RSVP Volunteers serving in both counties. This year, the event will be held as a picnic at DelGrosso’s Park, Tipton. Our 200+ RSVP Volunteers will be invited to attend the picnic lunch followed by a recognition program.
There will be many opportunities for Kohl’s associates to assist at this event including:
• set up and tear down of event
• registration of guests
• accepting and logging donations for veterans being brought to the event by guests
• assisting some guests through the food lines
• manning the soda fountain station
• distribution of materials and gifts to guests

SOS Volunteers and Community Partners are the essence of SOS. The local commitment to helping make our District a secure, supported and inclusive community is strong, and evident at SOS.Annually, over 350 volunteers contribute knowledge and expertise to SOS Programs and the Thrift Shop's growing success. It is for that reason that we are able to offer so many important community programs and services. Your Volunteer time at the SOS is fun, flexible and social. Volunteering in your community can easily fit any schedule or lifestyle.
Come and join us at the SOS, volunteer for the success of our community, whether it's just one hour or several hours every week/month. We'll introduce you to our team, give you an excellent orientation and training for all our positions, and welcome you to the SOS family.
How can my group get involved at SOS?
SOS’ Community Partner Initiative is an opportunity for businesses and groups of friends to come together as a group and lend a helping hand at SOS.
Volunteering with SOS in this way is a great team-building experience, interesting and fun. Come see the Thrift Shop from the other side! Up to 6 team members can volunteer at a time, per shift, in the Thrift Shop. Other group volunteer opportunities could involve representing SOS at community fairs, at local events, etc.
Morning or afternoon shifts at the Thrift Shop are 3.5 hours and take place each day, Monday-Saturday. Volunteering in those roles includes working side-by-side Thrift Shop staff and volunteers tagging and pricing, bringing merchandise on to the floor, and helping at the cash desks. Larger groups can also be accommodated. Please call us to discuss.
How does this support my community?
Over 80% of SOS funding comes from the Thrift Shop. Thanks to donations, purchases and volunteer assistance, the Thrift Shop is the key funder of SOS and makes our more than 30 vital community programs and services possible. 95 cents of every dollar raised at the Thrift Shop goes back into this community.
