COVID19 Enhanced Peer Support, Information & Referral Project 2020
Outreach Technology Volunteer

Second Cohort Starting September of 2020

We are seeking volunteers to pioneer new methods to connect and support seniors in our community who are isolated due to COVID19 or other issues.

• The first phase would be connecting our members who are currently in isolation due to COVID19 with our support, information, and referral program.

• Second phase would be to enhance our online ‘virtual’ programming to become a permanent part of our programming structure.

• Third phase would be creating simple processes to introduce connecting technologies to seniors in isolation.

The South Granville Seniors Centre’s is a non-profit seniors' centre located in the South Granville area that offers a variety of social, recreational, and wellness programs and services. We aim to provide local seniors with affordable and inclusive programming that promotes increased social engagement, health, and well-being.

The Centre is unifying three programs in response to the COVID19 pandemic:

• Peer to Peer Support training ensures volunteers who may be seniors themselves have the tools and skills as laypeople to work with isolated seniors who may have multiple life challenges (e.g. dementia)

• The Isolated Seniors Program is committed to providing support for isolated and house-bound seniors in the community through regular telephone contact. The goal of the program is to identify isolated seniors in the community and help those isolated older adults maintain their social support networks, improve their physical and mental well-being, and strengthen their ties with their community.

• Our Information and Referral program provides an essential service to low income, socially isolated, and marginalized seniors by connecting them with local legal, government, social, and educational services to meet their needs.

A key aspect of the training provided will be how to help seniors find assistance and gain access to information and services in their communities as we deal with the specific challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Time Required
In addition to the eight to ten hours of training we ask for a commitment of four hours a week for a minimum of six months in order to provide continuity for our team. This position requires you to work with the Centre Staff and Volunteers on a regular basis.

• A six month minimum commitment.
• Must have a high level of competency with existing online and digital tools and the ability to simplify processes for technologically unskilled users.
• Familiarity with community resources for seniors is an asset, but not required. Training will be provided.

• Recognize potential user challenges and develop strategies to deal with such situations.
• Work with the Centre’s programming team regarding the technology required to develop and deliver ongoing virtual programming.

The Legacy Week appeal is a time for all Australians to show their support for the widows and children whose loved ones have served our country. The Legacy badge is a special emblem of support for our veterans' families, symbolising our nation’s greatest values of mateship, compassion and fairness. Legacy badges may be little but the funds they raise make a big impact.

For this to be successful, we require support from the Sydney community and are counting on our supporters and new supporters to assist.

There are a number of ways to support Legacy this year;

•We are looking for volunteers to cover various areas of Sydney Legacy, including the Sydney CBD. We are looking for assistance each day, with our primary focus on Thursday 4 September on our annual Badge Day. Throughout the week volunteers from organisations, local schools and Australian Defence Force rove throughout the CBD selling Legacy Badges to raise much needed funds for our charity. Fundraising with friends, family or peers is a fantastic way to make an impact to the families of our servicemen and women who have lost their lives, or their health.

Thank you for your consideration and support of Legacy.

We need your help. We want you to write letter(s) that will uplift an elderly stranger!

We’re not all Hemingways, but we can all make something beautiful for ourselves and others by putting pen to paper.

According to a Pennsylvania State University and UC Irvine study, “small gestures in everyday life,” like showing compassion and performing random acts of kindness, help us feel loved.

In the digital age, words on paper are a novelty that we overlook. Letters are something to cherish: to set on a desk, to stick to a fridge, to bind in a scrapbook.

That’s where we come in.

We’re collecting cards and mailing these to elders in seniors around the globe.

You can write by yourself, with friends, or even at school or the office.

Take a few minutes right now, sit down, and write a letter to an elder (a stranger) telling them about yourself, maybe say a joke or a riddle and let them know that they are loved. Making a difference can be so simple, yet it can be incredibly impactful!

It might feel difficult at first to be writing to someone you don’t know. Our advice: just pretend like it’s a conversation! What kinds of things would you want to talk about to a stranger?
