Cycling Without Age Seneca County's goal is to embrace our mission, “To change the world by combatting loneliness and building a stronger community across generations.” We do this through a simple act of kindness and by volunteers, taking senior citizens and individuals with disabilities on bicycle rides so they can engage with others and enjoy the great outdoors. The cycle rides allow the individuals to "feel the wind in their hair," and feel the freedom of mobility that they might otherwise be limited to. Using a specially designed three-wheeled cycle with a two-passenger seat at the front of the cycle and a driver’s seat in the rear where the cyclist (or Pilot, as we call them), we are able to pedal the passengers for a lovely cycle ride in the fresh air.
During the past 12 months, CWA Seneca County has given over 633 rides to individuals from ages 3 to 103, with our 26 volunteers donating over 352 volunteer pilot hours along with our Board of 7 donating over 168 hours of their time. Generally, we have at least two to three, or more volunteers go to a nursing or care facility or event and provide a safe, assisted cycle ride for our passengers. These rides allow them to get outdoors and feel the joy of cycling, without needing to pedal. We generally have one person who functions as the captain and works with the facility staff to schedule rides, another individual, coordinates our volunteers to assist on specific days and times, while others get the passenger waivers signed and assist with loading and unloading passengers safely on to the Trishaw. One volunteer usually interacts with the residents as they wait their turn and help with any issues that may arise. This program is a blessing to the riders, as well as the volunteers. We have some volunteers who help with the fundraising so we can purchase the Trishaws and for their maintenance and insurance costs. We currently serve the area of Seneca County, Ohio.
In just our first active year, we have 26 trained volunteer pilots

The Association of Horizon is seeking volunteers for our week-long summer camp for adults with disabilities in July 2023. This is a wonderful opportunity for students (ages 16+) to earn up to 144 service learning hours and experience a truly unique volunteer experience - great for those interested in diversity, nursing, pre-med, occupational or physical therapy, social work, psychology and more.

Benefits:
1. Gain skills assisting a person with a physical disability. Past volunteers who have gone on to the workforce or college, especially nursing and pre-medicine programs, have used their time with Horizon as experience on their resumes and as topics for personal essays.

2. Increase communication skills and ability to work on a team. Our team leaders and camp staff promote an atmosphere of open dialogue, respect, and cooperation. Volunteers will utilize teamwork and open-mindedness in their individual pairings and as part of a larger cabin unit.

3. Expand worldview to one with increased diversity and inclusion. A large majority of our first-time volunteers had never met a person who uses a wheelchair until they came to Horizon. The vision of our organization is to create a more socially conscious community, where barriers between people with and without disabilities are transcended.

4. Most importantly, have fun! Our volunteers get to participate in all the activities that are available to the campers for no cost. Many of our campers and volunteers ride horses, canoe, fish, and spend a week away from urban life for the first time in their lives!

If this sounds like an opportunity that your students might be interested in,
Please check out our volunteer packet where you can sign up to be notified when our 2023 application comes out: https://associationofhorizon.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/2023-Volunteer-Packet.pdf

If you’d like to schedule a Zoom or an in-person presentation from Horizon to share this opportunity with a large group of people, this can be done by request. Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions!
