Looking for a volunteer opportunity built around your schedule? Volunteer to drive older adults to the grocery store, shop for them, or pick up & deliver orders placed online.Food insecurity is a concern for many older adults. Imagine not being able to drive to the grocery store or being unable to walk through the aisles because of mobility problems. Our grocery volunteers drive care receivers to the grocery store and assist with shopping if needed, or the volunteer will pick up their grocery list and money and shop for the care receiver. We are also seeing an increase in requests for simple pick-up and delivery of grocery orders placed online. Volunteers will also assist care receivers with bringing groceries in and putting them away if needed.
This is a one-on-one volunteer opportunity. Volunteers are matched with a care receiver to assist once per month and plan shopping events directly to accommodate each other’s schedules. Like our medical transportation, volunteers use their own vehicles and establish their own criteria of time and geographical areas where they wish to drive.
Family support and public transportation are not consistently available to older adults that no longer drive. Without transportation, older adults lose their independence and are denied access to basic living services such as getting to medical appointments, buying groceries, or accessing social services. As a volunteer, you can help fulfill a need and make a connection with the older adults in your community.
Through your service you can help Faith in Action of the Greater Kanawha Valley enhance the dignity and quality of life for all people in our community, neighbor to neighbor.

The Forget Me Not Project is a weekly memory café that offers elders suffering with dementia or Alzheimer’s a place to socialise, take part in activities and receive a hot, nutritious meal. All the members are over 70, retired, and many live alone due to their circumstances e.g. lost families, friends or their families live far away. During the COVID-19 outbreak, many of them are facing a long period of time alone in isolation. The person that runs the group has been keeping in regular contact with the group and has been sending activity packs to keep their spirits up during lockdown. The Forget Me Not Project would like volunteers to write letters to their members as a way to boost their energy. A simple letter or card is a great way to show that someone is thinking about them, even if you don’t know them.
ELBA will host a workshop over zoom for people to create their cards and letters. ELBA will provide some background to the Forget Me Not Project, guidelines and some inspiration for your letters. The members of the Forget Me Not Project often take part in arts and crafts activities so love to see other people’s creations. They really enjoy pictures of nature and animals so you could draw a scene and include it with your letter. Or, if you prefer to just write a letter, you could use the session as a chance to talk with other volunteers for inspiration of what to write about.
Workshop agenda:
10 mins: ELBA and Forget Me Not Project introduction
15 mins: Guidelines and inspiration for letter writing
25 mins: Time to write your letters
10 mins: Share letters, follow up details and session wrap up
