I know of no better feeling than that which comes from helping our elderly neighbors, the disabled, veterans, and people in poor neighborhoods who cannot, unaided, tend to basic yard maintenance—mowing, raking, edging—and, in winter, snow-clearing.

I’m looking for volunteers to join me, and experience the same wonderful feeling I get every day I am out there, helping people do what they can’t quite manage on their own, what isn’t hard for me, and that looks so nice when it is done, which gives a boost to the whole street.

Volunteers can have their own shareable profile URL, custom e-mail alias, and phone number extension. I truly welcome any and all help, which can range from school-kids to professional landscapers, neighbors with a bit of extra time, teens, students—really anyone who can help out and would like to.

I started this enterprise, but volunteers are its backbone. They keep the change-making engines running. One guy, even the one in my mirror, can’t do this alone. To sustain it, and scale it ever upward, volunteers are crucial. Think about becoming one. There is no “minimum” work requirement. You do what you can, where you are able and willing to go. Maybe just lawn work and not snow-clearing. Maybe the other way around. Maybe a little of both. Maybe a very little of both. No matter. Whatever you do will be helping someone who can’t do it. And I know of no better feeling than that.

1. Decide on a topic or story that relates to Renesting, Homelessness, furniture, or area nonprofits.

2. Write between 250 and 500 words. Avoid complicated and vulgar language.

3. Email us your topic idea or a draft with the subject line "guest post" and we'll work with you to polish it up and publish it on our blog!

PROSPECTIVE VOLUNTEERS MUST CALL THE WAREHOUSE TO SCHEDULE VOLUNTEER TIMES. PLEASE DO NOT SHOW UP UNANNOUNCED.

Renesting Project receives donations of gently used furniture items that we give free of charge to those in need in Bossier and Caddo Parish.

Those donations need to be unloaded from donors' vehicles, cleaned, and inventoried in order to be ready for a newly housed individual or family to pick them up.

Volunteers should expect to move furniture (as a team, never solo), vacuum or wipe down furniture, discern if items are usable, and place furniture on the warehouse shelves.

We recommend wearing comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for longish periods of standing, moving furniture, and working in a warehouse with no airconditioning. As with any time you are in our warehouse and in accordance with Louisiana mandates, a mask will be required at all times.

Renesting Project receives donations of gently used household items that we give free of charge to those in need in Bossier and Caddo Parish.

Those donations need to be sorted, cleaned, and packed in order to be ready for a newly housed individual or family to pick them up.

Volunteers should expect to open boxes, sort items, discern if items are usable, do light cleaning of items, and pack them in boxes for clients.

We recommend wearing comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for longish periods of standing. The sorting/packing/office areas of our warehouse have air conditioning, but it can still get pretty warm, especially in summer. As with any time you are in our warehouse and in accordance with Louisiana mandates, a mask will be required at all times.

Seniors living in Riverside and San Bernardino counties, will appreciate a cheerful greeting card with their meal. We are looking for about 3,000 cards from adults, teens and children.

Cards with artwork, designs or crafty graphics are appreciated. OK to use stickers, decals, or other craft supplies that adequately stick to the card. (Please NO glitter or confetti.)

Cards may have a simple greeting (such as Have a Great Day, Thinking of You, A Smile from My House to Yours, You’re Amazing, etc.) or a philosophical quotation. These are NOT Get Well cards. They are to cheer up seniors, some who are homebound due to illness and others who may be more alone during COVID-19.

Size: Any size card is good that is not larger than an 8½” X 11”sheet of paper. (2 cards or 4 postcard-size cards made from one 8 1/2” X 11” sheet is great.) No envelope is required.

Other items: We have some Spanish-speaking clients, so bilingual cards are also needed. Bookmarks are also appreciated and Crossword/Sudoku magazines.

Supplies: We do not have a budget for this project nor for shipping. Any items around your house may be used. We appreciate your time and generosity and can give you a donation receipt if needed for supplies and shipment.
