Trained volunteers meet qualified walkers at their homes and enjoy some time outside together. The walker will be screened for safety to participate and the volunteer will participate in a 1 hour training session and undergo a background check. Volunteers must provide a photo to be used on their Let's Walk ID badge that will be worn during participation in the program. Walkers and volunteers sign a waiver to state that they are safe to participate in voluntary walking with others. Walkers can use any device needed to allow them to be safe while walking and it can be whatever distance they can tolerate, some just walk down the driveway and others can walk a mile. The walker will be assessed by a licensed therapist to participate and the information will be provided to the volunteer along with contact information to schedule a time that works for both parties. We keep volunteers close to home for many reasons: less time involved to help others, good knowledge of surroundings for safety, get to know your neighbors, do good in your own community.

Opportunity Details
The past two years have mainly been defined by restrictions on in-person opportunities for recreation and connection. In many cases, these restrictions have disproportionately impacted seniors, contributing to poorer mental, physical, and cognitive well-being.June is Seniors Month in Ontario. This year, we at the Unionville Community Centre for Seniors (UCCS) make a special effort to celebrate the diversity and resiliency of the seniors in our community by offering extra opportunities for them to gather safely.
To this end, we are seeking passionate BMO employee volunteers to help host our "Strawberry Social" on the afternoon of Friday, June 17. This event will be hosted at the Unionville Community Centre for Seniors (UCCS) in Markham. It will be an outdoor social (weather permitting, rain-or-shine) complete with games (i.e., bingo, trivia, darts, horseshoes, cornhole, etc.), treats (i.e., cakes, ice creams), and cool beverages (i.e., lemonade, iced tea, etc.). We anticipate that 40-50 participants will attend. Prizes (i.e., flowering plants, gift certificates, etc.) will be awarded to the winners of the games. The ultimate purpose of this activity is to engage seniors in our community in a low-risk opportunity for socializing and recreation.
We will require volunteers to assist with set-up/take-down, serving refreshments, running games, and awarding prizes. All BMO employee volunteers will also have the opportunity to socialize and connect with our senior participants.
Volunteer Requirements:
- Due to our vulnerable population, we require Volunteers to wear a mask during the event.
The requested budget allocation for this project is $300.00. This amount will cover the cost of refreshments (i.e., cakes, ice creams, beverages), prizes, and additional supplies (i.e., disposable cups, plates, cutlery, bingo daubers, games, etc.).
Below is an approximate budget breakdown:
Refreshments - $150.00
Prizes - $75.00
Additional supplies - $75.00
