We are hosting our sixth annual San Francisco Crab Feed in 2019! We are raising funds to place medical alert service dogs with diabetics in need. We are one of the only nonprofits that doesn't charge thousands of dollars for a service dog-- we only charge a $100 application fee. Our dogs alert on low blood sugars before they happen, preventing children and adults alike from potentially deadly low blood sugars. Our dogs also alert on high blood sugars, preventing diabetic ketoacidosis and helping to minimize the risk of long-term complications from diabetes, such as stroke, heart disease, vision loss, kidney failure, and neuropathy. Complications from diabetes consist of two of the top five causes of death in the US (heart disease and stroke), while diabetes alone is the 7th leading cause of death in the US (source: CDC).

We were the first nonprofit in the country to place dogs with children under the age of 12. We think this is vital, since parents of diabetic children sacrifice so much for their children. Our dogs work hard at night, waking up the child and parent when a low blood sugar occurs, giving parents peace of mind and the ability to sleep, a rare occurrence in the life of a "d-parent." About half of the dogs we place are with children with diabetes.

Here is a quote from one of our families:
“Our daughter will be playing and not feel her lows and Yalu will come and get one of us. It is really amazing. But the best part is the fact that she works at night. When our daughter's blood sugar is low at night, Yalu comes in and wags her tail against the bed to wake us up. So instead of setting dozens of alarms every night, we are able to sleep until Yalu alerts.”
