Opportunity Details

Max Fine (born March 20, 1950) was a 1968 graduate of Wyoming Valley West High School in Kingston, PA. He graduated from Kings College in 1972 with a Bachelor’s Degree in secondary education/social studies and later received his certification in elementary education from College Misericordia. After working as a substitute teacher at several local school districts in Northeastern Pennsylvania, Max accepted a teaching position at Red Rock Job Corps Center, where he worked as a GED teacher for seven years. He also worked in several social service agencies such as the Commission on Economic Opportunity (CEO), Children and Youth, and Project Outreach. Max also taught an SAT Prep course with Test Smart and religious studies at Temple Israel, Temple B'Nai B"Rith, and United Hebrew Institute.

Max’s favorite pastime and hobby was music. He loved to sing, write music, and play guitar. Max was also an extremely dedicated “Beatles” fan. He often quoted the Beatles’ songs, “Love is All You Need” and “Give Peace a Chance”, by John Lennon, as he was a strong believer in love and world peace.

Above all, Max adored his wife Sandi, whom he married on June 19, 1977. Sandi was the core of his world, his best friend, and the love of his life.

Although his teaching career was cut short by declining health, Max continued with his passion of teaching by instilling life’s most valuable lessons to his favorite two students, his sons Jeffrey and Michael. He encouraged his sons to reach for the stars and to pursue their dreams, no matter how difficult they might seem. Jeff and Mike aspired to be health care professionals with a common interest of wanting to help people from a very young age, as they supported their dad facing adversity and new life transitions. Max had the pleasure of witnessing Jeff become a registered nurse, and a few years later, Michael, become a physical therapist.

Max exemplified a man of great kindness and compassion. His calm and warm-hearted nature was inevitably felt in his presence. His smile and laugh was infectious, while his stories and jokes remain unforgettable. His great sense of humor largely defined him! He reminded us all to never take life too seriously. The simplicities in life were by far the most important, sharing his love with his family and friends. Despite Max’s health struggles, he never gave up and always maintained a wonderful outlook on life. Max was, and will always be a true inspiration to us all :).

In June of 2011, Max Fine passed away at the age of 61. On April 15, 2012, the 1st Annual Max Fine Memorial 5K Race was held in Wilkes-Barre, PA to commemorate the life of a man who left an everlasting mark of joy, inspiration, and love in all of the hearts of those who knew him.

In Max’s memory, thank you all for your interest in participating in the 8th Annual Max Fine Memorial K Race. By raising money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), we can help spread awareness and provide funds to help cover health care services, medical equipment, and support research endeavors for treatment and cures for individuals with neuromuscular disease. MDA was the charity that Max not only supported, but also benefited from for over 20 years.
