Alcon volunteers will be building a wheelchair ramp about 35 feet long for an elderly and/or disabled client. No prior carpentry experience is required. All skill levels are welcome! Texas Ramp Project build team leaders will set-up and oversee the build process, providing instructions and guidance as needed. TRP leaders will do all the cutting with saws. The primary tool for volunteers is a cordless drill.
Volunteers are asked to bring the following if you have them. Cordless Drill w/charged batteries, Tape Measure, Short Level (12 in. or so), Nail Apron, Work Gloves and Safety Glasses. Please bring water, snacks and sunscreen as well. Please dress for light construction work and wear closed-toe shoes. A typical ramp build is about four hours. The conclusion of the event typically includes the client testing their new ramp and a photo with the client, Alcon volunteers and TRP leaders. This is a memorable moment for everyone.

The annual New Vision for Independence Dining in the Dark event is a unique experience to raise awareness about blindness and raise funds for our local non-profit serving people of all ages with low vision or blindness and their families in Lake and Sumter Counties and The Villages. Attendees experience food, drink and conversation as they may never have before – without their sight. The meal will be served in complete darkness and the Lake County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team, as part of a training exercise, will serve guests while wearing their night vision goggles. Prior to the dinner, attendees enjoy the silent auction and cash bar. We need help setting up the event and staffing the silent auction.
