Enjoy a positive experience with a great team of Neighborhood House staff and other community supporters. Volunteers must be age 16+. Volunteers under age 18 must provide a completed parent/guardian consent form.
Bilingual volunteers are encouraged, particularly those who speak Somali, Spanish, or Vietnamese.
Volunteers must follow all applicable Neighborhood House safety protocols, including COVID protocols. COVID protocols may include but are not limited to, completing an online confidential health attestation, wearing a face covering, and/or social distancing. Neighborhood House adapts protocols to meet current local and state recommendations, including those from Washington State Labor and Industries. Volunteers will receive a copy of current volunteer protocols prior to your event.

The role of a Power Paws Canine Sitter/Raiser is an important and rewarding volunteer position that will help train a service dog for a disabled child or adult challenged by Type I Diabetes, PTSD, or Mobility Challenges. As a Canine Sitter/Raiser, the volunteer provides a safe, loving home for our assistance dogs in training while assisting in training reinforcement.Volunteers allow Power Paws to place service dogs for the disabled for 70% less than other agencies and we provide ongoing training for all clients for the life of the canine at no additional charge.
Prerequisites
• Minimum of 25 years of age
• Valid ID
• Level 1 FBI Clearance Card
• Power Paws Training
Time Commitment:
• Canine Sitter. Prior to becoming a Canine Sitter, the volunteer will need to complete a minimum of three (3) successful short-term sitting assignments. Canine Sitters will house and care for the canine for a period of 1 day to several months depending on need.
• Canine Raiser. Prior to becoming a Canine Raiser, the volunteer must compete a minimum of three (3) to four (4) successful Sitter assignments.
The total time commitment for a Canine Raiser is 12 to 16 months which is the average amount of time it takes for the dog to complete the assistance dog training.
