Gateway Association believes in transformation of community through the lens of disability. The different angles of community represented by those in the marketing and communications sector are pivotal to Gateway’s messaging. A good match would be someone who lives equity, diversity and inclusion in their personal and professional lives. A background in mentorship, innovative thinking and board experience is necessary for a sustainable, long-term relationship with Gateway. Covid has eliminated the need for board members to be physically present at the meetings. Gateway headquarters is in Edmonton and meetings occur between 7-9 times per year.

A marketing and communications portfolio will be co-developed with the board member, along with assignation to a sub-committee (staff and volunteers) with the same portfolio. We are looking for a board member to bring in expertise, strategic support and the gift of time (2-5 hours per month).

Gateway Association – Edmonton is seeking local professionals and businesses to take part in MentorAbility Canada and provide mentoring opportunities for people living with barriers to employment.

The MentorAbility Canada Project is a national initiative by the Canadian Association for Supported Employment (CASE) that helps employers, people with disabilities, and service provider organizations to get results in workplace inclusion. MentorAbility leverages collaboration between a national network of employment service providers and the Canadian Business Community to create opportunities for mentorship and a deeper understanding of the abilities of the fastest growing ‘minority group’ on the planet – people with disabilities (1 in 5).

A mentorship session is a fabulous and free opportunity for employers as it builds employer capacity, shows a commitment to the community and diversity of the people in it, as well, it demonstrates a commitment to workplace diversity and inclusion.

A mentorship session supports people living with barriers to employment to learn about different industries to give them the insights and guidance to increase their employability in their industry of interest. This mentorship opportunity is not at all a strain on employer resources, but these short mentorship sessions have proven to have a hugely positive impact on job seekers in this minority group and on employers striving to be more and show their customers their commitment to inclusion everywhere.

There are 3 ways to get involved and support inclusive hiring in Alberta!

Online Industry Info Sessions:
Industry employer information sessions are 1-hour sessions, generally using the zoom platform, where 2 to 20 job seekers who are interested in your industry can sign up for. Job seekers living with disabilities or mental health barriers to employment tune in to hear an employer talk about the “ins and outs” of their industry. Job seekers find the information very valuable and the chance to ask questions while building their communication skills and confidence is very beneficial. There is no job-ask or expectation of a job. This initiative is designed to skill build and bring awareness and increased capacity to both job seekers and employers.
Here is what the 1-hour online industry info sessions can look like:
1. Introduction of yourself, your title, and your company.
2. A little about the industry.
3. Positions that you hire for and what those positions consist of (many job seekers are interested in learning about entry-level positions in particular).
4. What a day looks like.
5. What you look for in candidates.
6. What you look for on resumes-how the candidate can help make their resume stand out.
7. How to stand out and highlight abilities, not barriers.
8. Steps people can take to get into the industry.
9. Questions.

1 to 1 online mentorship:
These 1-to-1.5-hour mentorships allow employers to share the ins and outs of the industry, various positions and to share with a protégé some steps to increase their chances of getting hired. Mentors may discuss resumes, skill-building, interview skills and/or share the tasks related to a particular position the protege is interested in. It is also an opportunity for the protégé to ask their own questions. These 1 on 1 mentorships can be organized by me or by you as the employer, either way on a date and time that works for both you and the protégé.
One of our goals with MentorAbility is to capture these mentorship stories/testimonials and share these successes widely across Canada to promote mentorship to increase capacity and understanding of workplace diversity and inclusion with other employers.

1 to 1 in-person mentorship:
These in-person mentorships can be 1 hour up to 1 day in duration at the discretion of the employer. Again, like the online mentorships, these mentorships give employers an opportunity to share the ins and outs of the industry, various positions and to share with a protégé some steps to increase their chances of getting hired. Mentors may discuss resumes, skill-building, interview skills and/or share the tasks related to a particular position the protege is interested in. It is also an opportunity for the protégé to ask their own questions. Again, these in-person mentorships can be organized by me or by you as the employer, either way on a date and time that works for both you and the protégé.

A Gateway representative will be present during the mentorship to lend support and provide additional guidance/feedback as necessary.

As a mentor, you can choose to mentor once or more frequently, during businesses hours, as your schedule allows. If you have any questions regarding this mentoring opportunity, please do not hesitate to contact Gateway Association – Edmonton at your earliest convenience.

Looking to officially partner with charitable organizations / firms / organizations in any category -- to help local Elderly Seniors (or anyone else in need of relief: disabled, military veterans, medical personnel serving on the front lines and cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy) in their own area with an outdoor socially distant, fall 2021 leaf removal clean-up day. These are people in true need - who can’t find help, don’t have the means financially nor physically to take care of their own yardwork.

Looking to do a co-branded, joint-announcement across available communication channels and host a dedicated signup-page powered by IWantToMowYourLawn.com as the lead generation webpage -- which can benefit all parties – your organization / productivity / goodwill reputation, beautifying your community and our non-profit org’s reach. Companies encouraged to sport their own company attire while on premise doing work together for added exposure for possible public relations.

Whether it's a few individuals up to 1,000's - we can support the promotional efforts through our own social channels and advertising grant. Based on resources (headcount) available representing your organization, we can customize the official program offering to a limited, set number of people qualified for our help! Can provide rakes and bags upon request. Note: Overflow of leads that hit "cap" allocation can be covered by other volunteers in the area.

I Want To Mow Your Lawn Inc.
A 501c3 Non-Profit Organization started at the peak of the pandemic (now with 120 volunteers across 30 states) has been featured in over 300 media outlets across the USA. Provides free lawn mowing and landscaping help for senior citizens not able to afford regular lawn care, unable to find help or just don’t have the abilities to upkeep it themselves. Volunteers range from College Students up to Early Retirees and everything in between i.e. busy working professionals, people in between jobs and full-fledged families, even landscaping pros that like to #giveback.
Our consumer-facing, re-imagined website platform enables clients to search for volunteers nearby by zip code and/or post their lawn care requests for others to reach out. Whereas generous volunteers can create a profile and set their own parameters based on their own schedule, distance willing to travel and equipment available.
