The IRC’s Economic Empowerment programs support refugees and low-income immigrants to rebuild their lives in the U.S. The programs are organized around helping these immigrants, whom we refer to as our clients, achieve two key milestones: 1) rapidly establish basic financial stability, and 2) grow income and assets through upward economic mobility and increased financial resilience. The IRC implements evidence-based models that are shown to create a positive impact on participants’ lives, as well as cutting-edge, innovative techniques that provide long-lasting change in the lives of those engaged in IRC’s programs.

A core part of this work is building peoples’ knowledge of US financial systems and confidence in navigating these systems in pursuit of their goals. IRC’s financial capabilities programming supports communities in achieving this through financial coaching, financial education, and improving access to vital financial products.

Financial education videos are a useful resource for IRC staff to share with immigrant newcomers as part of ongoing financial education services. These videos provide a resource for IRC clients to learn more about financial topics on their own time and in their native languages.

In 2022, the IRC launched in-language financial education video content for Afghan communities through the SAFE project [https://www.safeirc.org/hc/en-us/articles/4423054306327] which had a viewership of 10,000+ across the globe. The IRC would like to expand our impact and offer these resources to more immigrant communities by translating them into languages commonly spoken by newcomers.

How You Can Help
Volunteers will be translating financial content, which will be developed into video resources. Video topics include Budgeting, Banking, Credit, Taxes, Auto-Purchase, and other related areas.

As part of this opportunity volunteers will complete the following three items:
1. Translate financial topic presentation text (10-20 PowerPoint slides).
2. Translate financial topic script (4-7 page script)
3. Record translated audio for video voiceover using translated script (10-15 minutes of recording).

It is anticipated to take volunteers an estimate of 10 hours per topic. Volunteers should feel comfortable completing an accurate translation and audio recording in one of the following languages:
• Spanish
• French
• Arabic
• Dari
• Pashto
• Burmese
• Kiswahili/Swahili
• Kinyarwanda
• Urdu
• Russian
• Ukrainian
• Mandarin Chinese
• Nepali

Translations and recordings are expected to be complete within five weeks of receipt and saved in a Google Drive folder labeled by language. An example of these resources are saved here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1k2EejxJmvJ_69kp0nl8US4AMn_rkQnNG/edit and an example of a recorded video is here: https://youtu.be/LJnbwugQGhw.

Dos and Don’ts
Translations
Dos:
• Volunteers should translate all words and phrases in diagrams, figures, or images.
• Volunteers should download a copy of the document, allowing them to edit the document directly with the translated text and upload the translated version to the relevant folder labeled by language.
• Volunteers should reach out to IRC staff if there are any questions on the opportunity.

Don’ts:
• Volunteers should avoid using Google Translate or other translation software to avoid inaccurate translations.
• Volunteers should not edit the English PowerPoint document saved in Google Drive, as this copy is meant for all volunteers to use as a template.

Audio Recordings
Dos:
• Volunteers should read through the entire translated script prior to starting the recording.
• Volunteers should use their preferred audio recording medium, including Zoom or an audio recording app on their phone.
• Volunteers should include the slide number in English, prior to saying the translated text. Ex. Slide 3: What is credit, then continue with translated audio.
• Volunteers can record in parts or as one recording. If recording in parts, volunteers should label the recording upload with slide numbers in the designated folder.
• Volunteers should reach out to IRC staff if there are any questions on the opportunity.

Don’ts:
• Volunteers should not try to record the entire script without pause. It is easiest to record several slides at a time and save/pause recording to ensure accuracy.

Participation Steps
1. Watch the volunteer orientation video: https://youtu.be/iHy0kO4YLek.
2. Once you’ve watched the orientation video, contact IRC Staff, Maria.Sigalas@rescue.org and include this volunteer opportunity title and your translation language(s).
3. IRC staff will invite the volunteer to a Google Drive folder and identify video topic to be translated. Volunteer will be provided with a presentation and script for translation.
4. Volunteer will translate identified presentation, including charts, figures, and phrases in graphics, and save in folder labeled by language.
5. Volunteer will translate identified script in template provided.
6. Volunteer will record video audio, by reading through translated script. Upload into Google Drive folder.

Nepal, a country still recovering from the 2015 earthquake, is among the least developed nations globally. However, thanks to the efforts of volunteers and local partners, an NGO is continuously carrying out earthquake infrastructure construction projects throughout the year.

The construction initiative in Nepal brings together a diverse group of participants, including graduate engineers, students, families, and individuals of all ages, to collaborate with and serve local communities. Many view their involvement in Nepal as an adventurous undertaking that adds meaning and significance to their lives. Regardless of whether you possess construction experience or not, you can be an invaluable asset to our local team.

Given the extensive impact of the earthquake, which left numerous underprivileged communities and millions of people homeless, Nepal has placed high priority on rebuilding and resettlement. Thus, our on-site work camps have a lasting and tangible impact. The direct result of your time and dedication immediately improves the lives of the affected communities. Whether you are taking a gap year or seeking an immersive travel experience, the Nepal project welcomes your participation.

PROJECT TYPES AND MISSIONS
The project focuses on the rural areas of Nepal that were severely devastated by the earthquake, the most significant in over 80 years. Thousands of families were left without shelter, water, or electricity, and though supplies poured in from around the world, the recovery process continues years later. Rebuilding the region remains a pressing need, highlighting the vital importance of our building program.

By volunteering with us in Nepal, you will work alongside local communities to reconstruct the infrastructure that was destroyed by the disaster. Your tasks may include erecting temporary classrooms, demolishing dilapidated buildings, painting and decorating, engaging in small-scale redevelopment like brick-laying, maintaining and beautifying landscapes, installing water purification systems, and tending to gardens. This description provides only a glimpse into the range of activities our program encompasses. We encourage our volunteers to approach their tasks with an open mind and flexibility, as additional needs may arise on a day-to-day basis.

Furthermore, volunteers will have the opportunity to contribute to social initiatives aimed at supporting traumatized children who have lost their homes. Information sessions are organized to educate these children on the use of the water purification systems that you will install. The possibilities on-site are vast, and the most crucial factor is your willingness to offer assistance.

With such a diverse range of construction and community service tasks, you will quickly discover your own strengths and abilities!

REQUIREMENTS:
– 18 years.
– Intermediate level of English (understand instructions, able to communicate)
– Passport copy.
