It would wonderful to have Kohl's create special welcome kits for our new residents. Entering the shelter system can be an intimidating transition for children and families. HELP USA provides many support services to help families during this difficult time. This includes welcome kits to make them feel more at home. Families receive basic toiletries, as well a warm welcome note of encouragement put together by volunteers. HELP offers this same project for Back-to-School Backpacks and school supplies.

You are welcome to make the kits here at the HELP central office or at a Kohl's office or location. Our office is located on the first 3 floors of a HELP USA affordable housing building, so it’s also a great place for your staff to come and see first-hand what we do!

wALL Austin is a non-profit art complex and gathering space in East Austin, bringing music lovers, musicians, and the community together to celebrate and create art while fundraising for social and environmental justice.

The marquee piece of the space will be a 1000 x 10 ft wall (focus on the ALL in “wall). In our political climate, the word "wall" has become synonymous with mistrust and separation. This project aims to reclaim the concept of a wall not as divisive, but as strong and unifying. As such, the wall is composed of bricks engraved with inspiring or meaningful song lyrics. The public can purchase a brick bearing a favorite lyric, with all funds going to one of six charities we will be supporting. As the wall gets built by the public over time we hope to demonstrate that we all have common ground and are all capable of contributing change in the world.

The space will also include a state of the art music venue and event space, shady parkland and picnic groves for public gatherings, an art gallery, and space for cultural and educational programming.

We're in the middle of our buildout of our first phase and need help rehabbing the space we're in (an old juvenile detention center!). Activities include converting a shabby courtyard on the property into an hacienda-style outdoor music venue, painting and hanging art in an indoor hallway to transform it into an art gallery, plenty of landscaping, and other odds and ends.

Each volunteer that spends at least four hours working on the site will get to put their own brick in the wall with their favorite song lyric.

Board Members sit on the Board of Directors for our organization. They are the guiding force behind the work that we do. Board Members have a connection to the district either as residents, business owners/employees, building owners, or organization partners. They choose to get involved in JP Centre/South Main Streets because they have a vested interest in the sustainability and vitality of our business district and the surrounding community.
We address issues such as business scouting and support, location scouting, building development and design, community placemaking, technical assistance for businesses and organizations, and liaising with the city. We work to bring residents, business owners, and the City of Boston together to support our business district.
We accept Board Member applications on a rolling basis, for three year terms. Board Members attend monthly meetings and volunteer for planned events, as needed.

UPDATE: we've nailed down the dates for Pick-a-Pear-a-thon and will be harvesting twice a day from Omega Farm 8/25-8/31, and from Foley Community Orchard 9/2-9/8.

Details and RSVP for either week (or both!) here:
Omega: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pick-a-pear-a-thon-omega-farm-tickets-69588831067
Foley: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pick-a-pear-a-thon-foley-community-orchard-tickets-69589188135

Pick-a-Pear-a-thon is Urban Abundance's biggest harvest event and fundraiser of the year. With two orchards that have about 500 Bartlett pear trees between them that all ripen at the same time, we will be working night and day to harvest as much fruit as possible over two weeks to donate to Clark County Food Bank, and we need all the man-power we can get!

Last year, with the help of our volunteers, we donated 9,000 pounds of fresh fruit to the food bank in these two weeks! All volunteers get to take Bartlett pears home with them after the event, and it's a great way to spend a day out in nature in a beautiful pear orchard.

These harvest events are free, family friendly, and a great opportunity for companies looking to do a community-service day with their employees. Come one come all!

We would like to start the Columbus Apartments Community Garden beautification project. Currently, the garden is overgrown with weeds and mostly vacant. Improving the garden will give the residents access to fresh fruits and vegetables without having the challenge of trying to purchase them with little to no income. In addition, Community Shelter Services is located in a part of Erie that is considered a food desert, which leaves residents without the option to get fresh fruit and vegetables, even if they are able to afford them. It will also be a way for residents to include physical activity into their day and provide them with a sense of responsibility. Lastly, I hope that improving the community garden will bring back a sense of community for the residents.

We are looking for volunteers to come and help with the transition of the garden. We will paint the raised garden beds, clear weeds, plant fruit and vegetable plants, etc. We will offer lunch for volunteers.
