WaterAid’s Colombia Team is recruiting an exceptionally organized volunteer to help develop a financial plan and analysis for a participatory community water project in an underserved community in Colombia.

WaterAid works in the department of La Guajira, an arid desert peninsula in northern Colombia and one of the least developed and most impoverished regions in the country. WaterAid focuses most of our work with the indigenous Wayuu people, who live in rural and marginalized communities where WASH statistics are comparable to or worse than parts of sub-Saharan Africa: 84% of the rural population lack access to clean water and 96% live without improved sanitation.

In a context of very low governmental presence in rural communities, due mostly to low capacity and high corruption levels, WaterAid works with Wayuu communities to manage and operate water systems autonomously, facilitating the organization of communities into Water Associations and providing technical training to ensure the solutions are sustainable and functional over time.

As our first community-managed micro-aqueduct has been in operation for the past 3 months, we see the urgent necessity of working together with the Water Association to analyze operational and management costs and build a financial plan that is adequate for the scale of the water system and the socioeconomic context of the communities it serves. Additionally, based on the recommendations resultant of this first exercise, we hope to develop a model for financial sustainability of community water systems for indigenous and rural communities in La Guajira and similar territories in Colombia.

Outputs
- Cost analysis for La Parcela community water system
- Financial plan to ensure long-term sustainability of the water system
- Recommendations for community-based water system financial planning and management model

Timeline
The volunteer will work with the WaterAid Colombia team to determine a suitable timeline for completion of the project.

Preferred skills
- Financial background with understanding of infrastructure projects
- Good knowledge of Spanish Language
- Knowledge or interest in Latin American policy and development

"Just Say YES! STEM FEST" is an annual event that launched on GA STEM DAY 2017 as part of Metamorphasis Powerhouse Company's Just Say YES! to Youth Initiative showcasing our Building E-STE(A)M For Youth Partnership Program.

Why digital skills?
From basic digital literacy to advanced computer science, digital skills are often out of reach for the young people who need them most. In a world being transformed by technology, all youth should have the opportunity to develop the creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills gained by learning computer science.

The focus of this event is to:

Reinforce growth mindset in young people and transition their thinking from "I CAN'T" into "I CAN" for STEM-related curriculum and careers

Help connect parents, educators and STEAM providers together to increase a capacity for a wider opportunity for partnership of resources and youth enrichment

Increase impact for the lives of children needing a deeper exploration of computer science, technology, engineering, the arts, mechanics, math, and medicine.

Serve the community in free open public spaces to increase the opportunities for fun learning environments for all people

Aspire to Inspire and help us Transform "I CAN'T" into "I CAN" for youth by serving as a volunteer, strategic partner, and STEAM advocate.
