When you sign up to volunteer with Empower Work by completing our online application, you will receive robust training and practice (~25 hours worth) that will prepare you to support the help seekers that reach out to us. We administer cohort style training for our volunteers, meaning that you get to learn alongside a consistent community of volunteers-in-training for 8 weeks. Our peer counseling training is based on coaching fundamentals, including establishing trust, active listening, powerful questioning, and forward momentum. We also delve into management, employee rights, and workplace dynamics.

In addition to the training, our volunteers must commit to 50 hours of service on the text line, with at least 2 hours a week. Once training is completed and you are promoted to Certified Peer Counselor, you will begin signing up for 2 hour long peer counseling shifts based on your availability each week between 7am and 7pm PST, Monday through Friday.

It’s a big commitment which can be hugely rewarding as you help people at crucial moments while developing your own skills and joining a growing, incredible community of volunteers.

Since the start of the pandemic the number of people reaching out for support has skyrocketed. From people dealing directly with the effects of the pandemic, to those in the midst of job searches or with already difficult relations with managers, the current situation has heightened work-related anxiety and stress. Peer counselors are needed now more than ever!

Impact
Peer counselors report a deep sense of fulfillment helping others, and a feeling of reward in developing their skills, which in turn helps them to excel in their own jobs. Our volunteers report that their skills in active listening, creating space for emotions, and helping others find solutions to their own problems are invaluable in their own jobs and lives.

Coaching Sessions provide an opportunity to engage NPower students in the process of professional development while providing them with additional confidence to support them in our program. Coaching Sessions provide a relaxed environment for students to gain valuable advice from seasoned professionals.
At the time of the event students will be preparing for their internship interviews. A small group of 2-3 NPower students are matched with a volunteer to discuss career concerns and gain valuable insight from seasoned tech professionals that have successfully navigated the corporate environment.

• Volunteers will be asked to join a 30-minute Zoom call with NPower to learn more about NPower, our work, our students, and how to best prepare for the Virtual Coaching Session.
• Participants must be able to access Zoom video conferencing.

Milwaukee Parks Foundation is seeking thought leaders to help with answering the question: How do we measure the impact of parks? We all know parks have a profound impact on our lives, especially in the last few years when outdoor activities have been the safest way to interact with our loved ones. But how can we use quantitative and/or qualitative data to measure our parks? How do we tell the story of just how much our parks mean to us? Through workgroups and design thinking, we hope to come up with a new way to measure the impact of parks.

Girls Gearing Up Leadership Academy (GGU) is committed to creating real societal change by educating and empowering young female leaders to appreciate the needs of their global and local communities. We are intentional about inspiring a generation who believe they can affect change, and be the change they want to see. We are proud to launch our GGU Mentoring Program, to help girls achieve their goals and gain leadership skills by pairing them with inspiring successful women who coach, connect, encourage, and open doors for the girls.

The GGU Mentoring Program offers young women regular one-on-one mentoring over 12 months, from women who are leaders in their community or business area. The program focuses specifically on leadership skills like building confidence, public speaking, self-awareness, leadership, and entrepreneurship (with a focus on technology).
Mentors in the GGU program represent a wide variety of nationalities, personal stories and career backgrounds - and are inspiring professional women committed to providing ongoing support to our participating girls.

In monthly 1-on-1s with their mentors, girls will plan, share progress and celebrate wins as they work towards their goals. Girls and mentors will also build a supportive community with other participants outside their own pair, through special group workshops and events.
Our mentee-mentor community will continue connecting, encouraging and opening doors long after the mentoring year finishes, through our active alumni network.

Opportunity Details

Maranatha EFC Outreach will be hosting a craft night on Thursday, April 28, 2022, from 5 pm - 8 pm. We will be working to assemble crafts to be included in gifts for needy children. Tic-Tac-Toe Games, Beaded Bendy Dolls, and Necklaces. The crafts will be included with school supplies and hygiene items to donate to children. Some of the most recent gifts were used in refugee camps for the children fleeing Ukraine. The craft supplies and tools will be supplied. All of the crafts are easy to assemble, no special skills are required.
