EMPOWER YOUNG PEOPLE TO OWN THEIR ECONOMIC SUCCESS

JA BizTown combines in-class learning with a day-long visit to a simulated town. After learning in the classroom, students put their skills to work by becoming employees for a day at JA BizTown, a hands-on simulated learning facility that features many different businesses and industries. During their time at JA BizTown, students operate a simulated economy and take on the challenge of running businesses. They get hands-on experience as both employees and consumers, paying rent, taxes, and utilities, buying advertising from the radio station, purchasing insurance, depositing paychecks and buying other business’ products, handling customer service, and more.
Volunteers will be assigned to a storefront and act as business advisors to help guide the students through their day. Training will be held in the morning before the students arrive.

SIFMA Foundation’s national essay competition extends what students learn in the Stock Market Game (a virtual investment simulation) by challenging them to review a long-term investment scenario and make analyst-style recommendations. Students from 4th - 12th grade work individually and explore concepts of saving and investing, asset allocation, corporate governance and more, while reinforcing their ELA skills.

- Volunteer Role: Judges represent the financial industry, scoring student essays by 4th-12th graders.
- Commitment: Each volunteer scores 4-8 essays (300-1000 words each), which takes approximately 1-2 hours.
- Guidance: Judges receive a rubric and easy instructions once essays are assigned via the InvestWrite volunteer portal.
- Timing: Sign up today, registration closes on December 13! Judging will take place January 7-9.

How to Sign Up:
1) Visit www.investwrite.org
2) Create an account by entering your contact information and creating a password.
3) Click on “Register for InvestWrite” in the top right corner.
4) Click on “Please select user type” and select “Judge”.
5) Once you’ve completed the registration form, you will receive an email to confirm your enrollment as an InvestWrite Judge.

Please note: Essay assignments will be emailed to you on January 7th. This email will contain the instructions for scoring the essays.

Opportunity Details

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) supports over 100,000 low-income community members every year in accessing vital social services. For the last 10 years, the IRC has hosted Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) programs across the country to assist community members in filing their taxes, accessing refunds and credits vital to their households, and providing financial education on financial management. In 2024, the IRC supported over 1000 community members in filing their taxes, resulting in over $2 million in refunds.

The IRC's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program provides in-person and remote tax preparation services from mid-January - April 15, 2025, in 3 cities: New York, NY; Dallas, TX; and Salt Lake City, UT. Volunteers are a vital part of this program in making sure low-income community members have access to this vital financial service at no cost.

IRC VITA staff can provide information sessions and training to support staff volunteers in completing required VITA certifications.

VITA Volunteer Roles:
1. (In Person) Volunteer Site Coordinator: Assists with managing day-to-day operations. Program outreach, scheduling, volunteer management (scheduling, time tracking).
• 10+ hours/week

Certification Requirements:
• Volunteer Standards of Conduct (10 questions)
• Intake/Interview and Quality review (10 questions)
• Site Coordinator Exam
• OPI Language Line exam (10 questions)
*Advanced Preparation exam recommended but not required

2. (Remote or In-Person) Tax Screeners: Assists in screening people for tax preparation. Confirming their information, ensuring they have the appropriate documents and referring elsewhere if their case is outside IRC’s capacity to assist (ie. business taxes, self-employed, 4+ jobs etc.)
• 3+ hours/week

Certification Requirements:
• Volunteer Standards of Conduct (10 questions)
• Intake/Interview and Quality review (10 questions)

3. (Remote or In-Person) Tax Preparer: Meet with clients to complete tax returns using TaxSlayer software.
• 3+ hours/week

• Intake/Interview and Quality review (10 questions)
• OPI Language Line exam (10 questions)
• Basic Preparation (30 questions)
• Advanced Preparation (35 questions)

4. (Remote or In-Person) Tax Quality Reviewers: Review tax returns prepared by other
volunteers to ensure accuracy and quality of preparation. Support preparer in sharing any errors for correction with future applications.
• 3+ hours/week

• Advanced Preparation (35 questions)

All certification exams are completed on the IRS’s Link & Learn platform and are open book. Certifications should be completed by January 10, 2025!

The foundation will address homelessness by giving to those in need. This will be accomplished by patterning with Big Big Bethel AME Church at Trinity Table of Trinity United Methodist Church, 265 Washington Street SW, Atlanta, GA, on Sunday, November 10, 2024, from 12:20 pm EST - 2:20 EST to had out food, clothing, and other donations to groups or individuals, etc.

More than 1,500 youth “age out” of the Los Angeles foster care system each year without parents or family to support them in the difficult transition to adulthood. The Alliance for Children’s Rights offers these youth workshops on topics instrumental to achieving and maintaining independence. Previous topics have included goal setting, budgeting, consumer literacy, nutrition, and coping with trauma. The workshops help to fill the learning gaps that often affect foster youth and impact their ability to maintain employment and pursue higher education.

The Alliance is seeking volunteers to develop and lead a life-skills workshop for our young adult clients. You would bring the topic and the expertise, and Alliance staff would partner with you to craft a presentation that is relevant and compelling for the youth we serve. Workshops are held at the Alliance office, with refreshments provided by our team.

Date and time to be set based on volunteer availability. Weekends are preferred. Workshops typically take place the Alliance's headquarters. Free, underground parking is available onsite.

The Alliance for Children’s Rights provides legal aid and services for foster youth in Los Angeles County – the largest foster care system in the country. Clearing barriers to stability and opportunity, we advocate for children and young adults impacted by foster care, so that they can access the support and services they need to thrive.

Each year, on the weekend before Thanksgiving, the Alliance hosts a Thanksgiving celebration for our young adult clients and their families. Together, we enjoy a delicious holiday meal, and every family leaves with a gift basket of helpful items—like toiletries, cleaning supplies, and other essentials—generously provided by our community.
We’re seeking up to 5 volunteers to help fill gift baskets and set-up for the event.

Growing Heart provides homemade food assistance on a weekly basis to clients in need. We offer bread bake days Tuesdays 5:30pm-8:30pm & Sundays 2-8pm. On these bake days we will be baking bread, crackers, treats, making homemade laundry detergent, hand soap, face wash, and organizing/putting together client orders! We feed over 100 families every month!
